Title: Redhat 8.0
Post by: KernelPanic on 17 October 2002, 20:42
The RedHat 8.0 updater thingy is telling me I need to update my kernel. I dont like the sound of it doing this for me, is it safe?

If this question has been asked before, just call me stupid.

zlib is a library of compression tools. My understanding is that it's pretty important in any useful system. But my understanding could be wrong.

Do you have a bad CD?  Did you do the CD checks prior to installing to make sure they weren't hosed?

A lot of people don't like updating the kernel using RPM. When I did, it just added the new kernel (didn't replace the onld one), so I'm pretty sure it's safe.

this is the third time i burned the CDs and the first time it crashed I did do the CD chex.

It is 10% done installing without zlib now.... it used to crash at 1%

Very strange. The CD check passed?  The check is painfully slow so I never actually let one complete myself. But it does sound like a bad image.

Well, if it was a bad ISO I would think that the CD checks that RH8 gives you the option to do would fail. That's why I asked if you actually did the CD at the beginning of the installation.

oh.... well i did check the first cd the first time.

Now it says it cant mount the CD when it asks for Disc 2. I say "fuck Redhat 8.0". I will continue to use Red Hat 7.2 and maybe try installing Debian or FreeBSD.
