Title: Install query (Redhat 6)
Post by: Daedalus on 17 December 2002, 13:47
Ok I'm about to install RedHat 6 onto my system for a dual boot setup and want to make sure I don't lose nething during the process, so please bare with me.
I have a 3Gb hdd which I think is hda and only 1 partition (hda1).
I have a 28Gb hdd that seems to register as hdb1 for the 2Gb partition (i want linux on this partition) and 26Gb of games and download on hdb5 (why does it do hdb5? theres no 2,3,4 it just skips straight to 5??) which I don't want to lose and can't backup.
I tested and mounted these devices in VMWare under Win2k. They seemed to work fine and just as I expected (except that my 28Gb partition 2 was on /dev/hdb5).
Last time I tried to install linux (RedHat 5.2) onto the 2Gb, Windows could no longer see the 2Gb (thats fine) but couldn't see the 26Gb! I panicked and I have no idea how I got back the 26Gb (maybe fdisk or something to restore partition tables - had Win98 back then).

But I would like to know how I can set up my harddrives to allow me to install RedHat 6 onto my 2Gb partition on my 28Gb drive, and still have Windows see the 26Gb partition without data loss.
And what would my options be for booting? Have lilo modify my Windows disk (hda) boot partition and it can still boot Windows or RedHat as I choose? (I want to default to Windows too).

Any help/suggestions apprieciated. Thanks   (http://smile.gif)

Why Red Hat 6 when Red Hat 8 is out, is your machine old and low on resources?  Why only 2GB for Red Hat? If you have a copy of Partition Magic you can delete the 2GB partition, move the 26GB partition to the front of the drive and shrink it down a few GB so you have more room for Red Hat. Also, what version of Winblows are you running?

And of course you are playing with fire if you can't back your stuff up and you are unsure of what you are doing.

Lol I got it installed  (http://smile.gif)
Partition Magic rocks...Disk Druid is what I must of used last time and it hid the partitions from windows (as the docs for PMagic say). But I got it all workin fine...cept my Ps2 port died and I only got a usb mouse.
And why RedHat6? Crap swap meet = RedHat 6 and OpenLinux2.2 was all they had  :(
Dialup = I'm NOT downloading isoz, though I'm gonna get Debian installed over net  (http://smile.gif)
And I'm not gonna bother about resizing. I figure I'm not gonna install much over net install of Debian and I'll mostly be using Wine or small programs I think.

How much better _could_ winblows be if it was open source? all m$uck programs moved to open source? Security updates and bug fixed would poor in in the hundreds of thousands and windows _could_ be rendered almost bug-free  :D
Hmmm, a future with microsoft changed to opensourcesoft and some ppl who know what they're doing (ie, none of m$ and all of the linux group (ok so thats a few million  (http://smile.gif) )) could put together a good OS i say. But hey, thats just my ramblinds   :D

The entire operating system is written in Basic. No *real* programmer would want to touch or even look at it.

Hey ... my first ever program was written in basic ... for the Oric 1, also I have used basic on Sinclairs (ZX81, 48K and QL) and I have used Basic on Amstrad ... in fact an amstrad cpc464 program was for my final year electronics project (and it took around 50 hours to run to completion). But then I'm not actually a programmer, so maybe my views don't count, and none of these are Visual Basic **shudder**.

if it was in basic then they would have had to port the freebsd "ping", "netstat" and "ftp" programs over to BASIC.... its probably Visual Basic.

I have to be honest and say I didn't notice it because I had mozilla set to block your images (don't worry, I block everyones). After a quick unblock I see that it looks pretty cool. Thanks!

Well that was one of the first things I ever wrote in PHP for my personal web site (and the source is not pretty, but it's available in my download section). If I recall I actually wrote it before that date but may have just updated it then and changed the date. I have since updated it slightly (so it wouldn't be quite as embarrassing offering the source) but have not changed the date. The Void's BS site is actually only about 3 weeks old, and hasn't changed much since the day I put it up.  (http://smile.gif)

it's probably C and C++, i am certain that microsoft are not taken in by their own advertising, however it would seem likely that a lot of it would be in VB since microsoft tend to take on a lot of kids, and those starry eyed youngsters probably think learning VB is the first step to programming for microsoft.

also, i saw the humour in everybody's posts, so if one of you wasn't trying to be humorous then i'm sorry for laughing at you!  :D   ;)

I'm sorry, I didn't get much sleep last night, had to get my son to the orthodontist first thing this morning so I'm working on about 3 hours. Sorry I didn't pick up on it. An even bigger example of my blatant lack of cognizance would be that I thought your post was from Calum when I first read the thread. I didn't notice that it was from you until just now.   (http://smile.gif)

I am pretty sure the last line of code Gates wrote was on a punch card.

It's mostly Visual C++ I think. I have Visual C++ 6 Standard and the code for many controls is included to help you find errors in your code that microsoft put there  ;)
For reference, it's located in the VC98\MFC\SRC directory.
It seems to be the only part of Windows we'll ever see if it don't go open source :|
And guys, if it was all done in basic, how would VC++ work? Your werent thinking if you didnt get void main's joke. How fast is basic? It's slow assss heeeeellllllll. Quick my ass :\
And Bob 11: Stallman, I have RedHat 5.2 and 6.0 (single cd distros) if you want  (http://smile.gif)
