Post by: Leech on 1 October 2002, 13:55
I have been a Microsoft Systems Engineer for around 7 years now, but must admit this LINUX is one exciting O/S.

I am currently converting my home network to Linux, just because it kicks so much ass.

I am almost fucking there, just need to do some tweaking and i'll be complete, my first LINUX box, FUCK I'M SO PROUD.

Anyhow, I have installed a LINUX box on our corporate network, which runs Firewall, it is a web server (FUCK MS PROXY), a mail server(FUCK EXCHANGE) AS WELL AS MANY OTHER THINGS, THE PROBLEM IS, IT IS SO FUCKING STABLE I NEVER GET TO PLAY AROUND WITH IT, IT JUST SITS AND WORKS IT's little ass off. Now our Windows Servers, humffffffffffff, need I say more.

Just want to know from you LINUX junkies, which LINUX is the most preferred, I have SuSE, which is pretty cool, but I wanna try some others.

WHICH ONES PLEASE... ALL VOTE NOW.

BITCHIN!

Go with Debian...since it seems you like to fuck around and tinker with things. That'll keep you busy for quite sometime.

Personally, I liked FreeBSD.  That will give you the opportunity to dick around, as well.

Well, exactly what I mean. I said to myself, okie, lets get LINUX. Search the web, *tap tap* humpfhhfhf, over a hundred varients. So I got the one that offered a case sticker, lame I know, but wtf. To my disbelief, the case sticker was torn off by my baby daughter. So that pissed on my parade.

Any how, tell me what you prefer.

i heard slackware might be good for playing around too. Somebody said it was more similar to AT&T UNIX than linux usually is, and generally people seem to say it is more nuts & bolts than most distros.

Might i suggest though, that for a really good linux tinkering experience you use one of the following distros:

Linux From Scratch (http://linuxfromscratch.org/)

BYO Linux (http://byolinux.org/)

Very interesting, thanks, I will certainly take a look into all the distros mentioned.

Have you guys had any experience with Linux, using a USB ADSL Modem?

re your USB modem, not sure if this is what you are after, as i don't have time to check, however i found this page (http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/latest.cgi) very helpful in making some modem decisions recently. hope it helps.

Try this for you speedtouch USB:

Linux Speedtouch Homepage (http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/)

With luck you shouldn't need to follow that advice because I think most new distros will prolly support it out of the Box.

Mandrake 9.0 reportedly supports it, also Alcatel and Mandrake are both french so it is most likely they will have support for it soonest.
If you're are going for a bare bones distro though and wanna get hands on anyway, you might enjoy fiddling and recompiling your kernel etc to get it to work....

ps I remember Alcatel having something about Linux and the Speedtouch USB somewhere on their(UK) website not so long ago. I can't find it right now, so that's something for you to do   (http://smile.gif)

Get slackware and then use it to build your Linux from Scratch. Thats the way to tinker with things. Try OpenBSD too it is really god for bein able to have really secure stuff.
I use redhat for my server, but i do it because it is easy (and the only onei could get to install on my old server)

1 - RedHat
2 - Debian
3 - FreeBSD (not Linux, just next favorite open OS)

I've also been an M$ Systems engineer for about the same amount of time. But I've been primarily a UNIX systems engineer for around 12 years now (AIX, Solaris, HPUX, SCO, Linux). Been using Linux from shortly after it's inception. Initially just as a cool toy because in the early days it wasn't very useful for anything other than that. But when SLS, Slackware, and RedHat made their debut it started getting serious.

I used to flip flop between Slackware and RedHat up to about RedHat 3 and I've stuck with it ever since as my primary distro of choice. The first time I used it productionally was around 1994-95 in our programming department on about 30 PCs. Had them set up to dual boot between Win 3.1 and RedHat (or maybe it was Slackware, now I don't remember, lots happened since then).

They made great cheap Xterminals for accessing our big IBM RS/6000 boxes running AIX UNIX. It worked better than Xceed (Xwindows connectivity software for Windows) and it saved us 300-600 bucks for the cost of the Xceed software. The programmers loved it because they could also use Linux for prototyping their apps right on their PCs before moving them to the big machines.

Of course Linux has matured *significantly* since those days. I have been using Linux more and more in my corporate jobs ever since. And we use Linux exclusively in my side business.

If you are like me, I thought M$ was kinda cool at first. But for me it got boring quickly, I just couldn't quench my thirst for knowlege using Microsoft. You are bound by defined lines that can not be passed once you reach them. Linux does not have such lines which is the trait I love the most.

Good luck and I think you will find the more you learn the more fun you will have.  And you will find that you may be able to come up with solutions to problems that you just never dreamed were possible in the Microsoft world.

Well, guys, this has got to be the friendliest forum I have ever been on. There doesn't seem to be the "I am god, you are crap" attitude that exists on so many MS forums. Brilliant!

Excuse me if I can't reply to all of the above messages, it is overwhelming.

I have got this far with my Linux installation.

Trying to load a kernal for my SCSI card. I bought a Compaq server, which will be my Linux box, a Prosignia 200, which is enough. It came with some dodgy SCSI card, a Symbios Logic. and trying to find the Drivers has proved difficult. And until I do I can't carry on.

I settled to re-install my SuSE 6.1 because I couldn't download any of the ISO images on any Linux site. I don't want to pay for it again either.

(Void Main) I admit that I feel the same way about MS. It is sooooooooo fucking boring, its got more boring over the years. Now it is like working with a fucking corpse. and Small Business Server really fucks me off, with all it's limitations.

(TUX) The Alcatel site that you posted is brilliant information, thanks, I haven't had a good look yet, but will as soon as I can get these damn SCSI drivers.

(everyone) All the Distros of Linux posted, well, what can I say, you guys rule. I tried download so many of them last night but had endless problems.

Once I put on SuSE, I am going to go through BYO LINUX (Calum).

Massive shout out to the following Linux Junkies (in no poarticular order):

fuckoffmicrosoft, LorKorub / BOB, Calum, Crunchy(Cracked)Butter, Tux,  Ex Eleven / b0b, The Master of Reality / Bob,  void main.

You guys rip.

Believe it or not, the server I have with the current longest uptime is an old Compaq with hardware RAID.  It's got 600+ days of uptime with only one reboot due to an extended power outage. I am running RedHat 7.0 on this particular server and it was a little tricky getting the RAID going but Compaq actually has decent Linux support. The server is not a Prosignia 200 and to tell you the truth I don't recall now what it is as it's in a friends server room hooked up to a T1 300 miles away. It's a square heavy ass server with 6 SCSI drives in it. Haven't actually seen it since I installed it 600 days ago.

At any rate, if I remember right the key was to get the SCSI module loaded at boot time. On my server I have two relevant kernel modules loaded. "ncr53c8xx" which I believe is the one you would need and I also have the "cpqarray" module loaded which monitors health of disks, etc.  I believe the key is to pass the appropriate command line to LILO (or GRUB) to get the ncr53c8xx module loaded. I do believe you can find the answer by searching around Compaq's web site. In fact, this looks like a good start:

http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/linux/compaq-howto-1-jan.html (http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/linux/compaq-howto-1-jan.html)

void main,

Thanks man, how did you kow that was the chip I was looking for.

Your server sounds a little bigger than mine, The proSignia 200 is only for small to medium busoiness, I installed a new Dell server at a customer for terminal sessions. He had this server lying around, and it had UNIX on it, so I asked him what he was going to do with it and he was going to throw it away. So, as I always like new gadgets, I took it off his hands in return for
Title: I'm almost fucking there!
Post by: voidmain on 2 October 2002, 16:11
Yeah, I think it's a little bigger. Believe it or not I bought it from a client I work for for $100. It's been doing heavy duty work for almost 2 years now.  (http://smile.gif)

That client used to run all Compaq. They have since switched to all Dell.  I have a lot of Dell experience from my previous employer as well plus my personal side business owns a few Dell PowerEdge servers. I've been putting in a lot of the rackmounts at several clients and my side business uses Dell rack mount PowerEdge servers for our network monitoring configurations. RedHat and Dell go together like white on rice. I've been running RedHat on PowerEdge for about 5 years and have never had a single problem, EVER. I can't say the same for NT and 2K on PowerEdge.

But as I mentioned, that Compaq SCSI controller was a little tricky but once you figure out the right LILO parameter to get the install going it's a piece of cake, and it has also been rock solid. I do run Linux on a lot of Compaq desktop machines without any trouble (no funky SCSI controller).
Title: I'm almost fucking there!
Post by: Leech on 2 October 2002, 16:18
The Dell server I installed was also a poweredge, strange. It's almost as if we are leading the same life on differant sides of the atlantic.

The last company I worked for had a lot of call for Rackmount servers but they were custom built.

The clients we have at this company are too tight assed to purchase a rackmounted server, so haven't touched one for over a year.

I'll let you know what happens with the SCSI issue. I hope it runssmooth, I got all my books and stuff, so fingers crossed it'll be cool.

Cheers man,

you could compile your own kernel and make sure you compile whatver scsi support you need into it.

My server that hosts The Bob Hub (http://www.bobhub.tk), a proxy, and an FTP server (sometimes). Is a 166MHz (Pentium MMX?) with 32MB of RAM (upgraded from 16 so i could put on RedHat). It is running redhat 7.3.

I havent tried BYO linux, but i have attempted LFS twice and failed. I am gonna try it again on my slackware machine.

Hey void main, i thought you were running RedHat 6.2 or somethin'?
Title: I'm almost fucking there!
Post by: voidmain on 2 October 2002, 17:54
In his case he doesn't have to compile the kernel as the support should already be there. The problem is it just doesn't properly detect the controller and requires some boot params passed to the contoller kernel module. Besides, it's usually easier to compile the kernel if you have a running system but in this case the system is not installed.   (http://smile.gif)   You are right though, if you did have some hardware that wasn't supported by the install kernel you could create your own kernel with the support for that hardware on a different machine, then create your own install disk using that kernel.

Now his version of SuSe may be too old to work but I know the RedHat 6.x series had support, just had to pass some boot parameters. The newer kernels may detect it properly and not require the boot parameters but I'm not driving 300 miles to find out, and I don't want to lose my uptime record.   (http://smile.gif)

Title: I'm almost fucking there!
Post by: Master of Reality on 2 October 2002, 20:41
ahhh yes, Bob. Well.... we are called Bob becauase we are members of The Cult of Bob. www.bobhub.tk (http://www.bobhub.tk)
What is the cult of bob?:

quote:

Welcome brothers and sisters, to the cult of Bob. You will no doubt be wondering what the cult of Bob is all about - it's the latest effort on creating world unity. Past utopias have failed due to idealistic plans that look great on paper, but in real life are always corrupted by money, conflicting views, baaad people or bad management.

Why is this? It's because people think too much and have different views on what a utopia should be. The answer to this? We need to stop thinking! Thinking is BLOODY DANGEROUS and will only lead to wars, famine, and back stabbing murdering types. It's well known that people who think too much can turn into goths, schizophrenics or manic depressives, it's a harsh fact that the world is evil, humanity is all wrong and needs to be destroyed, the government are out to get us and we're all getting diseases from genetically mutated food and mad cows. This is where the Cult of Bob comes in. We need to stop thinking in order to survive and be happy! To create a perfect unity in this cruel world we must lose our minds, and become perfectly harmonised zombies, incapable of emotion or rational thought! Don't you agree?

What do the cult of Bob do?
The answer to that is not very much. The best plans are always the simple ones, and that is why the cult of Bob is so perfect. As a member of the cult of Bob your role is simple:

    * You will, at all convenient opportunities chant the words "We are all bob" many times, in a zombified manner.

    * You will attempt to convert many other people into chanting with you. First they will think it's funny, then they will get addicted to it. Then you should direct them to this page, where they will become a member of the Bob cult.

    * You will worship the Bob god, who goes under the name of Bob. Bob is a female, but that does not matter, as the cult of Bob is not gender specific. All races, genders, and animals may join with us, to create an army of Bobs, united in our cause of descriminating against NO-ONE, except non-bobs. They must be converted, or destroyed.

    * You should, in time, lose as many braincells as possible. Drinking in excess, going to heavy metal clubs, or banging your head against the wall is a good way of achieving this. The cult of Bob should ideally be very stupid, and unified in their mission of chanting "we are all Bob".

    * You will sacrifice food to the bob god. The Bob god likes cheese, spam, salami and alcohol. Eating hamsters is a good way of worshipping your god, see here for a good introduction to hamster eating.

    * You should be happy and friendly to your fellow Bob clan. The cult of Bob will be unified in our mission, and any one with a bad word to say about another Bob will be tortured and slowly garrotted. No-one is to discriminate against another bob, no matter their colour, race, sexuality, features, or dubious smell. We WILL have utopia, by any means necessary.

* The cult of Bob is a spiritual cult, not a material one, e.g. we have no money. Due to this reason, we cannot provide members with t-shirts or keyrings either, sorry about that.

So that is what your role as a bob will entail. It's effortless, fun, you're destined to be happy. Are you interested in joining us?

so basically we drink, listen to lots of music, spread Bob. You can sign up for the cult of bob at www.bobhub.tk (http://www.bobhub.tk) and get your name in the hall of Bobs. There is also a messageBoard for the Bobs, and you cant get your very own email @cultofbob.zzn.com

RedHat Linux 7.3 should recognise the peer PCI bus architecture??

My SuSE doesn't therefore according to the Compaq pages that void main posted, will not recognise PCI cards, except those inserted in the first PCI host bridge.

Will RedHat 7.3 solve this issue, easily and recognise peer PCI Bus architecture automatically during setup??

Hmmmmmm, I wonder.

I downloaded that RedHat Linux 7.3 and need to ask what I fear is a stupid motherfucker of a question. Please bear with me and excuse my ignorance.

Is it simply the case that I can copy the files to cd and voila I can boot and install from it?

Or is there more to it than that??

No, these are ISO images. That is, the file contains the CD file system that needs to be laid out on CD. Most burn software has the ability to write ISO images, search your CDRW help for ISO images.

And now that you got RedHat 7.3, it's time to go get 8.0.  (http://smile.gif)   8.0 is pretty sweet.

leech, that page is updates, in red hat package manager format. You install them after your system is installed, to close security holes and fix bugs, by generally typing "rpm -Uvh whateveritscalled-isomething86.rpm".

Sorry for that,

it's just so much fucking different ..

I dig it ..

So .rpm are update files .. Cool

One of my first jobs was on a UNIX network, I used to edit DUMPS from satallite branches, I used VI Editor, but it was parrot fashion, so I don't make out I know much about all this. It's totally differant than what I am used to.

BUT I WANT TO LEARN .. SO BEAR WITH ME. YOU'LL BE SURPRISED.

well i have not learned vi yet, i tend to use emacs for my text editing needs.

as for rpms, as i said they are red hat package management files. they can be used for updates in the fashion i mention above, they can contain source code, which you can install using the same syntax, or you can convert the source code into binaries by typing "rpm --build whateveritis-i*86.src.rpm" also, rpms can contain libraries and other files that a certain application might depend on to run properly. RPMs can contain a lot of different stuff but basically its a red hat proprietary method of easily adding files to your system in a functional way.
