Title: Help on Choices
Post by: Open2Change on 1 September 2002, 07:44
Didn't know where to post this, new here - I have a VAIO running Windows ME - Miss my Mac, BIG TIME.

I am totally, embarrassingly illiterate here, can you load MacOS onto a Windows based computer, just switch them out? Or is Mac a type of computer??

If you had to choose between SuSE, Bear, Lindows, or as is typical, RedHat - which would you choose.

Please be kind, I'm just trying to get out of the Kingdom of Gates.

Suse 7.3 or 8.0! Make sure you don't have a wintel modem or some weird usb ADSL modem. SuSe will treat you right! A must for beginners!   ;)

Lindows is a no no.

SuSE. I installed the home edition and I love it! Libranet is also pretty cool.

My choices for the Linux virgin would be either Mandrake or Lycoris. Lycoris has the advantage of being not-too-different from Winderz, so it's not so intimidating, and it installs easily. However, it's still new and not quite so mature as 'Drake. And so, Lycoris can sometimes be flakey. 'Drake is also quite easy to install, comes with some excellent documentation, offers quite a lot of apps, and is still a full-featured Linux that will still prove useful even after you get over the newbie stage. It's not just something you learn on before getting a "real" distro.

Go to Mandrake Linux (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/fdoc/php3) and check out: Mandrake Linux: Installation and User Guide and Mandrake Linux: Reference Manual. Lots of good information there, and both are free downloads. Also keep this one handy as well: Linux Newbie (http://www.linuxnewbie.org)

And don't forget: there's a new Mandrake release due later this fall  :D

linuxnewbie.org has solutions to nearly every linux problem ever, ten times over

mandrake has been treating me very very well, even better than redhat

i will try redhat 8.x and mandrake 9.x after a point release has passed

and use kde 3
