is linux desktop ready?
i think that linux redhat/mandrake with KDE is very close to being ready for any average user desktop, even if they only want to use te GUI. I'm talking about migrating Windows users, i personally love using the command line.
The only things that i have been unable to easily do from the GUI is:
1. change monitor settings, eg. resolution, colour.
2. there was something else small, but i cant remember.
i'm not sure of much else that would be needed to have Linux redhat or Mandrake be desktop ready using KDE.
Can anyone think of anything else that would make the GUI a bit better for anyone?
Should this be in the linux forum?

1) If you configure all the resolutions/depths properly at install time you can switch between them using the keyboard. <CTRL><ALT><KeyPad+>

According to their website it looks just as easy to install as Windows XP, maybe easier.
I have ordered SuSE Linux 8.0 and it's on the way, so I'll give y'all a report on how easy (or hard) it was to install. It also comes with KDE 3 which looks quite good after looking at some of the screenshots some of you have posted.

I've installed mandrake 7.0 through 8.2 as well as the 8.2 betas and release candidates, and have seen them come far with the installation. As for idiot proof I look around at work, and realize no matter how easy something is, there's someone who will just mess everything up!

If you checked your hardware for linux compatibility there is nothing to worry about. They made the install procedure a lot easier, and it takes a lot less time then installing windows xp.....

And definitely upgrade to KDE 3.0. It's solid and much more pleasing to the eye...

I don't know if Linux is a 100% ready for the desktop yet, meaning that most of the average Windoze users, Microsoft targets at, will find that kind of transition somewhat intimidating.As time goes by though, we'll be seeing more and more user friendly distros starting with the latest SuSE or Mandrake distro.
I don't also find it a bad thing, as many others think, that Linux is making a move towards the end users as well. Let's not forget that most of us here share a common ambition: to watch M$ go down! And what better way is there to see that happen than aiming at what M$ currently holds and that is the 95% of the desktop market?!

After using the latest version of SuSE Linux I can say with certainty that Linux is ready for the desktop; all it needs is the commercial support.

SuSE 8.0 is completely ready for the average desktop.... ill never use windows again
