Title: Some thoughts about mplayer ....
Post by: Ice-9 on 30 November 2002, 18:11
I installed mplayer yesterday and it seems like an amazing little piece of software   (http://smile.gif)
But ...... (this wouldn't be me if there wasn't a "but")   ;)   when I use it to play a divx movie there are hickups!
I know it's not the files, I made them myself and they play fine with divxPlayer 2.0 Alpha for Linux.

Is there any "tweaking" that can be done, would installing the windows codecs "fix" this issue?
I mean, I can play the files fine under Red Hat but I kinda like the idea of 1 player to handle it all    :D

Edit ; just thought about something else, I didn't install the official nvidia driver yet, would that have any influence? I know in windows it definitely would, but I don't know if iot would with Linux....

definatly would be a big difference, go install the accerated X drivers NOW!!!

as for other  options if you have a scroll mouse and have it setup correctly, and want to watch the divx file, instead of invoking the gui. su to root and type
mplayer -vo dga filename.avi

but if you  don't like the though of root try

mplayer -vo sdl

and  if you are using alsa for sound
mplayer -ao alsa9
