A question for you people of knowledge (said with respect and humor). Whenever I try to download mandrake demo I keep getting hits on my firewall..is that the way it downloads-threw different ports? After downloading 2 virus's and having my broadband piggy-backed and having someone at a chat site tell me the contents of my computer it's kinda understandable why I am so leary.

Are you using bittorrent?

Demo ? Download the Full ISO
http://www.linuxiso.org/ (http://www.linuxiso.org/)
Burn it and it will boot then install!

I have a download accelerator, but was just thinking that maybe it won't download threw internet exporer(being the nasties that microsoft are I wouldn't put it past them). Also read somewhere that mandrake could be put on a cd and booted without being installed on system.

no.
it can't.
follow the instructions for burning on linuxiso.org. There is no good reason why you shouldn't be able to burn images you got using IE or your download accelerator however i would advise against either. in fact IE is such a security hazard i don't know why you haven't replaced it with mozilla firebird yet. get it from texturizer.net/firebird or see my roundup of other decent browsers here (http://openopen.org/software/browsers/browsers-overview.html).
I think the best thing if you want to try a linux using a CD without booting it is to download the suse live evaluation CD, or knoppix, or morphix, or slackware live. search google for downloads or just find them at linuxiso.org.
Of course these are a lot slower than putting it on your hard drive, plus they seem to have less hardware support (perhaps) than some of the full blown installable distros, but it's good for a tryout.
