Just for the kernel compiling guru's i stumbled across a few patches you might be intrested it

GRSecurity (http://www.grsecurity.net) for kernel version 2.4.17, lots of good secruity patches. Protects against TONS of exploits.

Preempt (http://www.tech9.net/rml/linux/) for kernel 2.4.17 +(?) makes the kernel less laggy...

If you want a good scanner for scanning vulnerabilities I think "nessus" is one of the best.  See http://www.nessus.org (http://www.nessus.org)
