peanut linux is lookin good so far for the 266 machine

You might want to try Debian. I used a network installation. All you need is 2 floppies. I needed about 800mb free space and all I had to download was 250-300mb. And that was for a desktop installation.
You might want to check it out.

Evil Entity (http://undeadlinux.com).

Meh, ZIpSlack.
-
hmmm zipslack looks tantalising. EXCEPT i dont want to HAVE to have it as umsdos. isnt there some kinda etx2/3 version maybe?
-
well isn't zipslack designed specifically to use on a fat partition? you need real slackware to do it on ext2 don't you? maybe evil entity would be best like the man said.

You don't have to have fat, because I heared of people installing a distro fromZipSlack (e.g they install ZipSlack ad then addon packages, etc.)

whats with the 600meg limit ive hit atleast 3.5 gig's in a months, and that is being very conservitive
-
its australia, its telstra. we get a 3 gig limit and weve used lots but we wanna get right up near the boundary to make the most of our limit.
-
i understand completely.

The only distro i've ran on a machine that old is SuSE 7.2 on a 200MHz machine, but I'm not sure if you have enough RAM to run GUI.
It comes w/ a lot of packages that can do a lot of things that you never thought possible w/ a 200 MHz machine in this day and age.
-
err actually i got mandrake 9 to run quite well on my p266. but dads got that one at the moment and hes giving me 64 megs of ram in return so ill have a p2-266 with 96 meg of ram. i beleive that is sufficient.

ZipSlack requires installation to a UMSDOS file. It was designed for newbs who are shakey about messing with the partition stuff (ala fips). I think 2 gigs is the limit of the file.
DragonLinux is based off ZipSlack and 2 gigs is the limit. It is also the first distro i tried -- but never got working... tis why i went with slack proper anyway, and i am much happier for it.

Try this out.
Linux-Antarctica (http://www.linuxantarctica.com/)
The gzip is 250MBs.

I have mandrake 9 on my 200mhz right now. It runs xwindows faster than my 433mhz because I decided not to use the resource hog kde, and use windowmaker instead.

Give Linux From Scratch (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org) a look-see. This might be what you're after.

Another benefit of LFS is that you can create a very compact Linux system. When you install a regular distribution, you end up installing a lot of programs you probably would never use. They're just sitting there taking up (precious) disk space. It's not hard to get an LFS system installed under 100 MB. Does that still sound like a lot? A few of us have been working on creating a very small embedded LFS system. We installed a system that was just enough to run the Apache web server; total disk space usage was aproximately 8 MB. With further stripping, that can be brought down to 5 MB or less. Try that with a regular distribution.

LFS : So can i just download the parts i need or do i have to download it all and install the only the parts i need?
-
looks like you must read through the instructions and decide for yourself whether you need each package or not.
You might prefer to use BYO Linux.org (http://byolinux.org/required.asp) which has a list of required/optional files to give you more of a clue of what you need/want/don't need to download.
