Title: Geforces and NIC's
Post by: smokey on 13 January 2003, 14:11: I have two questions before my linux box is complete.

The specs atm are
Duron 800
512mb ram
20gig HDD
some cdrom (probably 32x)
TNT2 M64
SoundBlaster PCI64
SMC EZ Card 10/100 NIC

1) Are Geforce4 MX 440's any good with linux? Are they worth $100 Australian?

2) I have tried two NIC's with RedHat 8 and they both fail to activate (both on boot and in network control). Is this a problem with RedHat in general or with my hardware? The other network card was a Macronix 98715-c 10/100 NIC. Both are detected in linux and the macronix was used in mandrake 9 with no problem. Both network cards work in other computers (running windows). :confused:

Post by: shuiend on 13 January 2003, 15:17: I have used SMC cards b4 in Red Hat 8. I had to go get pick the right driver in the list though. To get an SMC card to work you need to goto system settings -> Network control. In network control goto edit and it will eventually give you a list of drivers. Go down and pick one of the SMC which seems closets to your model then finesh the procces

Post by: smokey on 13 January 2003, 16:12: I got it working now! The chipset is a realtek 8139 and for some reason only works with a static IP. That's ok because at least the network and internet now work (http://smile.gif)

Here in the Netherlands they cost about 100USD and I got a GF2MX200 for 50USD and GF4MX440 is just a faster version of the GF2MX(my dad has a GF4MX440 on his comp and I have the GF2MX400) and paying about 50 USD more is not worth it! Get a GF3Ti or a GF4Ti! Or maybe even something like a GF2Ti, they are better! GF2Ti's might be a bit slower but they have more functions than the GF4MX440.

Not US dollars - Australian dollars (about half the price) so $100 Australian is about $50 (not really but as an estimate it is ok)

Found out - the GF4MX440 is costing me AU$120 so it is $68 US dollars.

The Geforce 2 mx200 features a slower graphics processing unit, than the Geforce4 mx440, and it features half of the video ram at 32mb, while the Geforce4 features 64mb. Also the Geforce4 has a few higher end features that arent on the Geforce 2.
