Title: Am doing a Power Point presentation about Linux.
Post by: Bazoukas on 11 September 2002, 21:26
I am taking an intro class that i should have taken a long time ago, and they want us to make a PP presentation.
My topic of course is about Linux Vs Windows.

I already downloaded some cool pics and found some sites that talk about Linux security Vs Ms security.

 Got any more links guys?

 I wanna knock them dead.

How about making a section about how the school should switch from Power Point to an OpenOffice/Sun Office presentation program?

You know what. I was thinking of that just now.

And I will check now and see if PP and Kpresenter play together. If they do am gonna make my presentation on Kpresenter.

:(

they dont play well together. Maybe another office suite can do that, but i only have Kpresenter on. Which it looks very damn cool from what i can tell.

hey im doing the same thing, in my advanced graphics class. and really, if they switched from word to oo, it would confuse all the idiots at the school. and since i know more then the whole collective of I.T. there, it wouldn't happen

i reckon if they were confused, it would show how confused they really were. any fool can use openoffice that can use Microsoft or star offices...

as for powerpoint, as far as i have seen openoffice is totally compatible with it filewise.
X11 once sent me a file he had made in openoffice, and it ran fine in M$ powerpoint for macOS9 so there you go.

I totally agree with Calum. M$ Office apps are still compatible with StarOffice or OpenOffice.org filewise. However, as I've read in LXF magazine once, it is very possible that the next version of M$ Office will use incompatible file extensions with any other OS   ! I really hope this won't happen since I still have to edit Word documents in StarOffice. You see, not everyone uses Linux or other *UNIX type OSes. We seem to be the exception to the rule  ;)

PS. Hey bazoukas, knock them dead man! Skistous tous malakes. Mathe tous kai kati allo ektos apo Windoze! Good luck man!

hey! computer people are supposed to be geeks, not greeks!

re: M$' closed file formats, hah! the M$ office format constantly runs away from people who try to open it up, and those people keep on chasing after it. This has happened before, with the seminal office utilities that used to come with windows 2 and 3. try opening up an old .doc file from windows 2 with a copy of word 2000 for instance!

Now Microsoft could have it one of two ways, if they insist on beginning a totally new line of file types:

1) they could allow users to pick "save as... old" or "save as... new" when saving. they would also put a bunch of dialogue boxes saying how you could lose a lot of functionality if you choose old, and i bet that fucking paper clip will have something to say about it too.

2) they could just allow the new file format and that's it.

Now, to discuss. With option one many users will choose "old" because many users still have pre XP versions of windows and pre XP versions of office and so on. Most company images are windows 2000 or windows 98 or even windows 95. So what would be the point in "save as... new" when the minute you have saved the document, you cannot send it to anybody and it is unreadable to any machine except the one you are currently using?

with option two, this problem is the same, however the choice will no loner be there, forcing users to save in a file format they did not ask for and do not need.

Now add to the mix the fact that Microsoft applications are no longer 'products', they are now 'services'. And you know what that means? it means that you do not pay for them once, you lease them per quarter.

So people will take one look at this new office suite and realise that it has no new functions that their old one did not have EXCEPT the fact that
a) it is no longer compatible with the "standard"
b) it now costs a shitload more if you want to use it for any length of time
c) it will be an administrative headache when it comes to auditing the licences

So my feeling is that Microsoft thinks it is invincible, but that this time it will find out it has bitten off more than it can chew. Users and admins are NOT as gullible as they perhaps were ten, fifteen years ago.

:D  . I told bazoukas something that I think everybody should know. Here in Greece they use Linux in schools! It's not a joke! Of course they do it for value for money reasons but who cares? And guess what? Kids really love it! I think they use SuSeE Linux because of the better support for Greek.

You're correct about the close file format issue  ;)

AHAHAAHAAHAHAAHAAH Calum!

I did not realize that you were cunning-lingual.

GOT A GOOD ONE FOR THE POWERPOINT RANGERS TO TRY

Using the latest and greatest version of PowerPoint, try inserting a specified 3 minute DVD selection into your presentation.....you know, where you have the DVD in your box and you tell PowerPoint to play that selection when it gets to a specified slide.  It must be a clip longer that 1 1/2 minutes.  (Lets say it's a DVD clip that you burned from your sister's Prom video, or something like that.)

You would think that this should work without having to convert the clip into some other format.....you know....just have it play the specified selection from your onboard DVD player.

Please let me know when you get to the point of pulling your hair out, or if you actually made it work.

Can OpenOffice or StarOffice do this successfully.  I would love to know.

Cheers and Beers

well i once made a powerpoint presentation containing a normal 30 second mpeg clip and it would only work in windows/powerpoint97. would not work in powerpoint 2000 or openoffice.org 1.0

not entirely compatible then, even with itself.

One of my clients paid Microslut 35 bucks for their so-called "Help Line" to get this PowerPoint DVD question answered.  They were told that this was a "professional" question and it would cost 250 bucks for help in resolving it.  Sounds to me like Microsoft generates additional revenue by sabotaging their own products.

I would like to see it.  And you mentioned that it didn't work with kpresenter which is a "KOffice" app.  Well how about with OpenOffice (simpress)? I use it to open PPT files all the time...

If you feel froggy and are willing to email it to me you can email it to me at my linuxmail.org address. I'm "voidmain" at (@) that mail server.

If you cleverly post your email address you will only get spammed by people reading the forum. If you post you email in tact it will be grabbed by the spam bots and you'll never be able to keep up...

sending your email in a pm (still not in a real format) would stop anyone but the person you sent it to from emailing you.

hmm, very valid point. well i've changed it now so it has spaces, and so far i have got no spam, so that's okay.

anyway, i found that if you try to post a mailto: using the [url] tag, it just turns it into a dud http:// link anyway, so you'd get a blank browser window, a 404, or a dns error if you clicked on my email address back there.

bazoukas, outstanding work on that presentation! I like it. It worked very good in OpenOffice, will check it out later in Powerpoint to see if there are any display differences. But even over my Linux terminal server session it looked great! Excellent work!

P.S. Did you get the $40 from each of the students?

Remember though the original assignemnt was to create a
powerpoint presentation if i was to run for president of my college.
But I managed to take it towards the Linux direction  (http://smile.gif)
I will be redoing the presentation though and give it as an official proposal.
