I just installed Mandrake 8.2
It autodetected all my hardware, even the USB cdwriter, and the SIS630 GRAPHICS CARD!!!!!!!
but no support for the SIS 630 modem, so that's a project.
And it was all up within an hour, compared to the 2 days it took to get WinME + apps up and running.
back to the old drawing board re: modem though.

BTW, XP sucks. An hour is a long time for a Linux install, must be a slow machine. Last one I did took about 10 minutes.

Your g/f must be as bloated as your OS or you'ld be spending more time with her/him rather than making a fool out of yourself with these comments. XP doesn't support a fraction of the hardware that Linux does. We've been over this. Remember there is life beyond your little Intel PC. Take your Windows shit into the Windows forums..

Or your privacy is worth a lot. You're just pissed because your daddy is in hot water with the government and the fact Windows is about to be replaced on the Desktop with Linux. Like I said, there are plenty of people over in the Windows forums that can talk you through formatting your drive and installing Linux. Maybe you can get a head start and still have a job when M$ closes their doors.

Seems to me IBM had these thoughts when M$ was in their infancy. History repeats itself. And I never have trouble with Linux and hardware. I don't buy M$ proprietary hardware. And I don't know how you figure porn into the privacy issue. What the hell does porn have to do with anything?
You probably work on a help desk. I've met a few help desk kids like yourself who think their the sharpest tack in the box. It's usually just sharp enough to burst their own bubble.

Zombie you are truly a mongoloid. I just built a brand new computer with extremly recent hardware, and guess what? Windows XP didn't detect the GeForce 4 correctly.. called it an unknown generic display adapter and it ran like crap until I got the drivers my self. Linux, on the other hand, knew what it was right away, and the accelerated drivers would have come with the distribution but it said I had to download them due to licensing reasons with nvidia. But at least it installed the opensource drivers and it didn't chug like XP made it. Yes, Linux may have some hardware that it has problems with, but if you get past winmodems and other crap there isn't much Linux doesn't support. This is truly amazing for such a minority desktop OS like Linux. Furthermore, why are you bragging about a monopoly supporting the majority of hardware? Get a life, you twat. Linux users may have to put up with a very slight amount of hardware incompatibility but on the other hand they don't have to put up with product activation, forced upgrades, outrageous licensing fees, or privacy issues (which, bonehead, some people value even if they don't look up porn) So shut up about your love affair with XP. If you think XP is so great then why don't you marry it?

The only hardware that i have had (numerous) problems with is my sound card, but i had the same problems with my sound card in windows and had to go searching for drivers for it. I fucked up my DVD out of shear stupidity (didnt bother to check if it was set as a master or a slave).
DO you block your windows from connecting to the internet or something? Even when i used windows 98 it would contact the update site to check for M$ updates (that was probably harmless though).And win XP contacts MS if you use hotmail, it tells MS what your searching for using thier "search assistant" thingy, i have never actually used XP so i am going by what i have heard.
And i have more private things other than the Gigs of porn on my hard drive, those people at MS can copy all my porn if they want to.

Yes, I and others want to help make Linux a better operating system. Linux is a community effort and everyone should help in some little way if they can. However, most of the time I just use it for a wide variety of computing tasks like programming, gaming, word processing, web browsing, cd burning, etc. just like you do on your Windoze based PC.
I don't know why you enjoy coming here and stirring us up like this, Zombie89325829, but it is obviously due to some deep emotional problems or the fact that you are jealous of the powerful Linux operating system and secretly want to use it yourself! :D

This topic was originally about how mandrake 8.2 is at least as good as what everybody is saying red hat 7.2 is,
i have tried win98 on my machine, it had an even harder time with the hardware than red hat 7.0 did, and i have tried win200, and it was a TOTAL nonstarter. I have performed this reinstall of winME many times. Many drivers, that say they are working fine need updated, some by unzipping files, others by executing DOS programs. Neither of these methods works from the "Update Driver" thing in the control panel, so you have to remember how to install each driver individually.
Also, I was talking about a complete install, including the removal of IE, the installation of other alternative browsers, and also the installation of all the apps i need, such as WinRAR, Winzip, Acrobat Reader, 602ProOffice, Opera, Netscape, ACID, Sound Forge.
Now with linux, ALL the equivelant apps come with the system so their installation time is included in that hour.
It usually takes me a bit longer to install linux because i read through each of the thousand or so components and decide what i want individually, this time i went for a default install, and it actually took about 45 minutes of real time, but i was hoovering and forgot to change to disk two.
It's a 'Coppermine' P3 850Mhz btw fyi.
With WinME, it would only have taken me one night to install except that after the first night it was unstable and fucked up, so i elected to format c: and reinstall from scratch, that is the only thing you can do to fix windows.
Now! that aside, back on topic!
A couple of things about my new install, it makes me realise how rusty i've become forgetting even the simple things i have learned about linux in the last week or 2 when i have been going without! My computer takes a bit of a while to start up and the reason is as follows:
Also, do you know the default installation doesn't even have 'make' installed?!?!? it's on the CD but is not installed as default. I think i'll be finding some other things that i want that may not be in the default install...
Pico isn't even included on the CDs! i'll have to go and get my red hat 7 CD to get some of my favourite apps!
I narrowly missed getting OpenOffice too, apparently CD3 has it on (that's just what i've heard) and i only have CDs one and two...
I couldn't actually install AbiWord either. I'm having a problem with the old
./configure
situation, but i'm sure i'll figure it out. It looks like make is having a problem finding a C compiler too, although i know i have gcc installed.
Anyway, i am sure i am boring the tits off you all, but i thought i'd just let you know how mandrake 8.2 is, since everybody seems to be on SuSE, Slackware or Red Hat.

Maybe Zombie2348975689034765789365893765897365893765938709346347112 is right when he says that XP supports more hardware than Linux does, but what I do know is this: Mandrake autodetects and configures/sets up drivers for my TV tuner, sound card, modem, graphics card, CD rewriter and printer while installing. However, with Windows, I've always had to spend about 83 hours after installing the OS (if we can call it that) hunting around for the individual CDs containing the vendor-supplied drivers and other software for these particular bits of hardware that Windows is too stupid to recognise by itself.

he isn't right about the hardware! it's just that the people who use winXP are more likely to own certain hardware then those who use linux.
Linux runs on a wider variety of hardware even if XP runs on a wider selection of kit within a small bracket of hardware (usually i386 based stuff et c).
Also, i was asked to reboot my machine 3 times during the winME install, another 3 times while installing the drivers, then 4 or 5 times while installing the apps and utils! ridiculous. Mandrake just installed, then ran. No rebooting, no hassle. The hardest bit was taking CD1 out of the drive and putting CD2 in about halfway through the installation.

Also, when i say linux doesn't support my modem, i mean that it doesn't support it right out of the box. By those criteria, windows doesn't support half of my kit out of the box! when windows is first installed i get 16 colours, a screen 480 dots across, no sound, no recognition of my cdwriter, this support all comes from the makers of the hardware, NOT microsoft, NOT windows. Mandrake linux detected virtually ALL my kit and configured it automatically with no problems at all.

The only close minded people I know of Zombiexxxx, are those guys like you who are either afraid or ignorant enough to install a true OS on their machines. As far as I am concerned, Linux and other *nix or *nix like operating system are superior by nature. I won't go into any details here (hell, it's an endless argument). You know that this is the case as well as anybody here does. If you don't then you should get educated. One way or the other, this is definitely the wrong place for you to be!
You're also wrong (and I believe you know that already) when you claim that Windoze works with a wider variety of hardware. You know that's not the case! Sure, windoze works with cheap peripherals (like GDI printers or winmodems etc), but who really needs stuff that don't work and destabilise one's system? LINUX WORKS AND RUNS ON A WIDER RANGE OF HARDWARE AS WELL AS DIFFERENT COMPUTER ARCHITECTURES NOT ONLY INTEL OR AMD PC'S!!!
You should also know my friend that we do have a social life (at least I do). Watching after the stability and security of our systems by using Linux, getting educated and informed, being open-minded in any sense doesn't necessarily imply that we don't have a social life.
Calum, I'm sorry man. I know that this topic was intended for Mandrake 8.2, but I had to say some things to this arsehole. I've tried both Mandrake 8.2 and Linux 8.0 on my laptop. They're both great distros!! Linux has really come a long way and is making impressive progress day after day!! (http://smile.gif)

I run my box with Mandrake 8.2 and Win98 (Gotta test Samba servers somehow) and I had a great XPerience when XP came out.
1: Insert disk
2: Boot machine (A-Bit KT-7, 768MB RAM 1200 Athlon etc)
next come various screens leading to black screen with Progress bar along with something like "Windows is preparing install" and on go the brakes. Yep, it just sits there with progress bar doing its thing. How long? Long enough to cost me 12 hours of tinkering and the price of an XP disk with a screwdriver through it.
Anyway, Mandrake 8.2, where to start? Well how about the flawless install on the desktop box. ALL hardware found automatically, GeForce 2 MX400, SB128PCI, SCSI rewriter, NIC, SCSI scanner etc. and sets the whole lot up for me.
Evertything worked out of the box. NVidia 3D drivers installed gives OpenGL acceleration and KDE3 rpms put the pretty (and powerful) front end on (read the README files, it's a doddle).
LAN and net config setup during installation so work straight off and the mount points icon in mandrake control centre has all the NFS shares on my server connected in under 2 minutes.
Then, just when you think it can't get better, the wizards! Shit they're good. During install choose expert mode and go through the servers section looking for Wizards_lib-xxxxx in each server category.
Once you're running you can set up servers e.g. Postfix, Apache, Bind, ProFTP and Samba etc. with a few mouseclicks to the point where they're functional and ready to be tweaked.
Remote admin through Webmin from any machine on the LAN, RAS dial-in or VPN make administrating the overall set-up a doss with no need to run into the office everytime we need to do something.
Believe me, prior experience with NT-4 / 2000 was a sodding nightmare in comparison to this! AND..... more bloody apps than I could ever afford to match in M$.
And that's where the bottom line is. For value for maoney XP will never match Mandrake
8.2 or SuSE 8 (we have both) and don't pull the bash it 'cos it's M$ as we have XP on a laptop in the office (OEM installed) as well as 98 and 95.
A side not is that I decided to put 8.2 on my laptop a 3 yr old K6-2 500 / 128MB RAM machine and it runs at a good useable speed. Try that with XP. Even the Lucent Winmodem works at full speed and KDE3 as well.
In all I now have Mandrake 8.2 on a Samba / NFS server, 2 desktop workstations and a laptop - Legally! Good enough for a tight fisted bastard bastard like me to join the Mandrake club with Star Office 6 into the bargain.
GOD I LOVE LINUX!
