Post by: rtgwbmsr on 5 September 2002, 10:15
Has anyone used Mandrake 9 B yet? Is it good/did they fix the Athlon install issue?

Thanks

My motto is that beta=blah. As a n00b, im scared shitless to try a beta of Linux. I don't care how stable it is or how far it has come. When I have a problem(WHEN, not IF), I must now blame it on

1:Mandrake being ghey
2:My Linux skillz are shitty
3:It's a beta.

Im paranoid about being caused great torment all because the luck of the draw chose this beta version to clash with this precise configuration of computer.

That is also why I will not use a beta version of Mozilla. Moz is either "fully confirmed to work 100%" or no go.  (http://smile.gif)

Where can I found out what Mandrake 9.0 will have over Mandrake 8.2? It's likely a long list(so you can't type it), so a link to the improvements would be great.

I'm running Mandrake 9.0 right now.  The first release canidate is already out.  I'm not on a Anthlon so I can't answer that question, but overall, its a great improvement from my last system, Mandrake 8.1.  The biggest improvement is its foreign language support, which gave numerous headaches in 8.1, not runs much much better than M$.  The only real problem I am having with it is telnet, which dosn't run at all.  A turely satisfying OS.

You should change your attitude.  Now Mozilla 1.1 final is out.  But, you missed out big if you ran 1.0 for all this time.  Dispite being Beta, Mozilla 1.1beta was much better than 1.0.  And I've had no problems ever with it.  Mandrake 9.0 beta works great, but if you are going to wait, the release date for Mandrake 9.0 is sometime late next week/ early the one after.  Heres a short list of included software from their homepage.

* kernel 2.4.19 RC1
* XFree86 4.2, which supports many video cards previously only supported in 3.3.6
* glibc 2.2.5
* Apache 1.3.26
* Evolution 1.08
* KDE 3.0.2
* GNOME 2.0
* Galeon 1.2.5
* Mozilla 1.0.0
* GCC 3.1.1

But Mozilla has been upgraded to 1.1, and I believe KDE to 3.0.3

Actually, I only switched to Mozilla a few weeks back, I now have the 1.1 Mozilla. Ok, perhaps I'll try out some of the Mozilla betas... if they have new enhancements worth using. I mean it's a broswer, easily fixable enough.

As for Mandrake.... well im just paranoid. Feels secure knowing that my OS has been through a shitload of bugtesting. I actually look forware to the new release though. I don't see any major improvements, but at least you get a bunch of updated packages. YAY!
