Title: Quake 3 and linux
Post by: Ice-9 on 1 July 2002, 01:47
Hi all,

I've run into some trouble ("again?" some of you will say)  ;)
I managed to get Quake 3 running in Linux, it wasn't that easy but it runs.
The only glitch is that I don't have any sound at all with it.
I spent the last few days looking for an answer on every site I could find, found some things that didn't work like changing permissions on /dev/dsp and stuff like that.
Now, from reading all the posts here for quite a while I know there are a few Quakeheads here and I dare hope that, once again, you guys can help me out.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?

Since I almost never play any other game than Q3 (and occasionally Q2) my journey to a life without M$ bloatware would be a lot shorter if I could run it properly  ;)
And of course there would have to be some support for the upcoming Doom III and Quake IV ....

hmmm, had the same problem before, what kind of sound do you have.

the shitty yamaha 724/*i think*/ i had had good sound but couldn't play quake. i know have a maestro based sound card. im sure a more modern soundblaster/*my current card is not without it's problems*/ would also handle quake3

hmmm, as for quake2, don't use idsoftwares install method, it's outdated. try this/*its multiplayer compatible*/

icculus's quake2 installer (http://icculus.org/news/news.php?id=602)

this is the version of quake2 i have that loads in less then  a second, it also i think has better graphics then the original quake2, have phun

Sry, should've mentioned that.
My soundcard is a Terratec XFire 1024, recognized as  Crystalclear Soundfusion audio accelerator.

The card is like maybe 2 years old.
And I have no problem playing mp3's with it.
the only thing is, sometimes when I log in as root and then switch back to the regular user account my sound is borked and I have to reboot.

hmmmm, all i have to say is that sound used to be shited on my box with the 3+ year old yamaha card, and when i put my new card in it worked. maybe someone else knows about this problem. do you have any other soundcards laying around that you could try/*probably don't, i have pills of hardware*/

Actually I have a Guillemot Muse XL lying around but it's even older than the Terratec and it slows down my pc a lot.
With the Terratec I have 215 FPS in 1024*768, 32 bit high detail, when I installed the Guillemot I only had 167 FPS with the same settings.

For the rest I use XFire 1024 in all my boxes, they're pretty decent cards.
I've been thinking about a higher-end soundcard though, something like the Terratec Six-fire, that front bay is just killing me  ;)

but did you get sound on the guilmont, and wow, 167fps is still alot faster then my box

I didn't get to try the Guillemot in Linux, as soon as I noticed the loss of performance I replaced the card with a Terratec, and at the time I didn't have Linux yet.
I you want I could send you my config files, I spent a lot of time tweaking them to get the maximum amount of frames.
We talked about our configs a lot on the XS Reality forums and I don't think somebody had a faster config than mine.
You can actually download it from my profile on the XSR site.

Already did that, didn't help.
I also read some things about people being able to play with sound as root but not as user, tried that too but even as root I don't have sound, so it's not a permission issue.
