is it wrong as a linux user to use msn or hotmail, i really don't know. Msn is part of microsoft isn't it. I always use Amsn on my linux machine

I don't think it's wrong to use MSN if all your friends are on that IM. I use dMSN (http://www.dmsn.nl/) myself.
Hotmail is evil however, and you should stop using it today!
The inbox is too tiny, the spam filter is a joke and there're just too much commercials.
If you want free web based e-mail, I suggest Yahoo! Mail (https://mail.yahoo.com/).

If you use planet-save (http://planet-save.com/), you can save the rainforest with every e-mail! plus their servers are solar-powered. You can also get a free POP account here (http://hotpop.com/index.jsp).
I don't use MSN because all of my friends are on AIM (and if they did, i'd try to get them to switch). For instant messenging, I use Fire (http://fire.sourceforge.net/) (Mac OS X only), but gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) is also a popular multi-network client.

Don't worry, you won't be damned to hell by using Microsoft's network. I tend to avoid the network myself like the plague though.
