Title: wierd prob w/ floppy
Post by: sporkme on 24 April 2002, 12:19
hi

been trying to make a bootable, but every time i format a floppy it returns errors.  if i just mkbootdisk it fails boot.

can't boot from cd on my system for some reason

i have gone through 14 floppys, all used.....

yes all used but hard to believe that not one of them is any good. or maybe so?  GRRRR

has anyone seen infallible errors in formatting?

running red hat linux 7.2

reason i need a bootable is to avoid losing access to linux when i install winblows 98 on the little partition i set aside for it's stupid ass on my old hd.  that bastard.

maybe i can just download an image from winblows?
the disk i used to boot into linux install was made in windows and it still works fine, though i am reluctant to format it for a few reasons.

suggestions?

i've had problems with boot disks in linux. I have 3 bootdisks and when i needed to use them none of them would work, i ended up reinstalling linux again after i had installed windows.

yeah reinstalling is looking like the likely solution but i will try a few of those things on the net.  thanks everyone!

here's the thing. floppies get real fucked up real quick. i know a guy that had like 20-30 floppies which he didn't use for a while. when he wanted to use them, they all were fucked up. I think that because Linux uses that whole inode system, it sees that they're fucked up when it's formatting. windoze does no such thing.

and if you really need to boot linux and don';t have a boot loader or something, just try a freeware bootloader like XOSL which installs from windoze and has a nice GUI or just use Loadlin (i don't know if they have a version for XP/NT yet though). As for your system not booting fom a CD, try to mess around with the boot order in the BIOS, just make sure it says CDROM, not a drive letter which coincides with your CDROM.  ;)
