I would probably go with mandrake its here:
www.linux-mandrake.com (http://www.linux-mandrake.com)
-
I'll second Mandrake, one of the best Distros (Distrobutions, Type of)out there, free or not
Mandrake 9.1 vs MS windows (http://www.mozillaquest.com/Linux_News03/HP-Mandrake-Linux-Desktop-PC-2_Story01.html)
-
for some crazy reason I thought you were gonna say suse(but I'm not sure if its free) but you can probably get a cd from someone
-
please slow down when you type. proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are all nice things, friend.

You can do an FTP install for free over the internet, but I wouldn't be astute doing this, so I don't expect a "noob" to try it. :D
I really like Mandrake, especially 9.1, I think it will serve our new comrade well.
they (Mandrake) have done a good job of turning most of the system configuration into GUI, much like yast, and Mdk 9.1 uses the RieserFS, exactly like SuSE, and Mandrake Uses LILO, might not mean much to a "noob", but if he ever wants to it will be easy to incorperate other Distros into the Boot Loader.
I don't understand the Syntax for Grub, I still can't get RedHat 8 or above to boot from the SuSE splash screen, 7.3 worked for some reason though??
Any way, I think MDK is a close second, dare I say equal to SuSE Linux. I've just become comfortable with SuSE, and I fear change......... :D

LOL Im not a n00b to ftp I just burned the ISO of mandrake 9.1 i will install it wen i get my new pc i will put it on this one :D during this time i will learn everything I can about linux, Why is linux so hidden and not that many people know about it? all most ppl know are mac and M$ Windows

Oh no, you see the system is installed from the server, you never download the iso, you use SuSE.com as the CD
-
lol I didnt download it I just dragged it out of there FTP and put it on my PC and burned the image look for yourself
ftp://raven.cslab.vt.edu/pub/linux/mandrake/iso/ (http://ftp://raven.cslab.vt.edu/pub/linux/mandrake/iso/)
Those I belive are all ISO images of Mandrake 9.1
-
Look here
SuSE.com download (http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/suse_linux/index.html)
I am not refering to the way you got MDK
I am talking about the SuSE FTP download only
there are no ISO images on the site
-
Yea , I saw the same thing for mandrake but i picked the ISO image mirror
-
I know I can do the FTP install over the internet but I rather format first what partition does Linux run under? [ sry for stupid question but im a noob to linux ]
-
if you mean, what filesystem format... it would be ext2 typically
-
look right f you use mandrake 9.1 you can pretty easily dual boot with with windows and slowly as you learn the linux apps and alternatives then you can fully migrate to mandrake suse is good but i recomend you use mandrake first when your good move to suse or red hat.
-
Thanx
-
and use ext3 or reiserfs instead of ext2. they are both journaling filesystems which helps a lot if you have a powercut or something.
-
Another thing you should do is to use gnome window manager instead of KDE. I prefer KDE but it will go really slow on a slow computer.

i'd steer clear of gnome, if kde is sluggish.
i would honestly recommend using windowmaker or xfce which are both mature and stable desktop environments, both of which are much closer on the right side of the bugs and incompatibilities horizon than either kde or gnome are.
plus both consume a tiny fraction of the overhead that gnome or kde use.
-
Thanx for telling me because , b4 I didnt know wtf gnome window maker and kde were lol yeaa im new to linux, is mandrake hard to install it should boot right up from the cd, can I pop the cd into my pc while runnunig xp and use the FAT32 FS ? or should I boot it from start ? I have never installed Linux b4 sry for the n00b questions
-
No would be the quick answer...
I dont have too much time now (neeeed sleeeep...) but this (http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Installation-HOWTO/) may help. (http://smile.gif)

Bying a book helps to avoid posting silly things like that.

mandrake is *very* eas to install, but if you really think the best way is to run windows XP and then install it on a SHIT32 filesystem then you have a lot of headaches coming your way.
simply put the CD for mandrake in your CD and reboot. follow the instructions, remembering to always use the advanced and expert options. don't do anything stupid and come and ask questions if you have questions.
-
What do u mean by exppert install and dont do anything stupid? is that where I pick the GUI I wanna use or I can switch anytime in root ?
-
the expert lets you choose more things yourself. Dont use the "recommended install".
Just boot your computer off the CD and it will come up and has pretty good step by step instructions i believe.
By "dont do anything stupid" i believe he means... if you dont know what the hell something is... you might want to ask about it before getting it or not getting it.
-
Well what do u recomend me to choose on the linux mandrake 9.1 Setup ? I don't know so I am asking, Im gonna find out everything I can b4 I install it :D
-
huh? choose what?

Partitioning will be the most difficult bit. You see Windows and Linux cant use the same part of your hard drive so you need to split it up.
I strongly recommend you read that article I posted a link to, especially the parts on partitioning.

Use the GUI. Use the GUI. Use the GUI.
Oh and using a text based non graphical screen isnt what root is about - root can use graphics or text screens, same as any other user. Root is the superuser, so try not to use it too often. You'll boot the CD up and it will go into a graphical install menu, from there you can choose "beginner" or "expert." Expert isnt too hard and gives you a lot more control which is why it's recommended.
Oh and so you dont forget:
Use the GUI.
Read that manual I posted a link to.
