Ok, i want to not screw up Linux this time....I have Red Hat Linux 9, and I want to get a Wine program to play some games on (ex. Starcraft, Diablo, Diablo II, and Counter Strike). First, which one do i get?...the source and compile it or one of the prekacked distros. Also, I tried to install it in the past, and I completely missed how to do it...so can someone give me some good step-by-setp instructions to installing it? thanks, and sorry yet again for my stupid questions
-
Read the FAQ on WineX there.
But, do not follow the instructions!
They are for version 2.2.1 and you will nead 3.0 and to pass some compile options to make it work with RH9's UNIX threads implimentation.
In a little while I will post some instuctions here for you. Thats unless anyone else wants to first...

Wait for Tux's advice. He's literally the Wine expert/guru of these forums. (http://smile.gif) I'd like to help but I never used or going to use Wine, not because I don't like it but because I don't have any Windows programs to run. :D
-
Ah the curse of a gaming addiction. :(
Speaking of Tux being the gaming expert wasn't there going to be a FAQ made a little while ago?
Anyways I will be apt-getting wine shortly so I should be able to offer some small advice on the config side but I'm still very much the newbie at wine.

Oops, sorry about that Faust and everybody. I ment to
to link to the WineX FAQ in my previous post.
It is over in the tips section at void's BS.

Quirk is supposed to me mirroring it to the MES AQ
but hasn't...
I think I wll download RH9.0 tonight and install
it tomorrow so that I can give advice on these
new GLIBC2.3.2 systems.
I will try Mandrake 9.1 sometime soon too.
ps If the formatting of this post is bad it's lynx's fault (http://smile.gif)

Just to let everyone know, I changed my name to ArmTheHomeless after my band. I will remove Formally:MichaelSoft soon.

hmm, i know you have rh9 and this person has mandrake, but does this help you at all (sorry, i didn't read the whole thing, just skimmed through and think it might be helpful)

i'm using redhat9 right now too, but i'm dling at an average of 600 Bytes per second lately (holy shit...AT&T has really pissed me off, and i'm getting cable modem access soon) so i can't try it myself. if you get it working, please tell us/me how, cause i really want to know!!

Soryy about the wait armthehopeless, I've been a little busy. I do have RH9.0 installed now and I will get you some instructions written this evening (afternoon US time). Before I do that, can I just ask what video card you use?
-
Also, The games you want to play:
Starcraft - Works fine.
Diablo - Appears not to work, ask Justin, SAJChurchey on these forums.
Diablo II - Works fine.
Counter Strike - Works Fine.
-
I have a Nvidia GeForce 3 64MB Graphics card, thanks. its ok that diablo doesnt work, i like diablo 2 better anyway....thanks
-
I'm really sorry dude, but this may have to wait another day or two.
I am having problem's with my computer (read: randomely blows up) i'm not sure whether it's my power supply or my electricity supply, but the dsigns are pointing to my power supply.
Sorry about that, but things have just turned out shitty :D
-
ok man, good luck on fixing the comp
-
hey tux, hows the comp going? did u get around to fixing it yet?
-
Yes i'm back, sorry to have kept you waiting.
I spent I lot of time fiddlong with the CVS version of winex3.0 and could not get it to work with RedHat 9. (that version did not seem to include the correct NPTL libraries)
I am planing to check out the very latest CVS version this weekend for you and see if I have any luck with that. But you will have to wait till the weekend 'cos I have a big exam tomorrow and another friday.
If the CVS does work I will keep a tarball of the source incase it changes and gets broken between me testing and me posting.
It may turn out that it doesnt work at all and that you will have to buy it, but, from what I've been reading on some forums it seems there must be a way.
I havn't forgotten you :) Just busy, post more this weekend.
-
take your time :D
i have to wait until about the weekend to do it anyways...thats when the new parts get here
thanks for your time tux

If it's any help, this is what i did to install it.
./configure --with-nptl
make depend && make
checkinstall or make install
Hope that helps.
I also have a problem
The autorun program from my Red Alert CD works fine, but when i clicked play, there just appeared several small icons at the upper right hand side of the screen. It also happened with the other things i run on my (C (http://smile.gif) directory (that's /wine).
-
unfortionatally, this didnt work. what distro do u use? thanks for the tip.
-
Even with 'with-ntpl' it still compiled without the libs and the compiled executable would not recognize -use-pthreads.
