While you are in the mood for converting, why not convert over to The Cult of Bob (http://www.cultofbob.tk)
We are all Bob, we are all very happy. The key to inner peace lies within the cult of bob

computers dont take that much energy, do they? I have two computers runnin 24/7

Computers (especially modern ones) are power hogs. Running them 24/7 will seriously affect your electricity bill.

Turning the monitor off at night does help a lot though. But not enough.

Unfortunatly my dad knows this so I can't leave it on 24/7. So now I'm keeping it on 24/7 while my family is on vacation to test how it works. Still fine  (http://smile.gif) . It's at 3 days 23:39. Not something I'd try under Windows (well, not if I have to seriously work with it).

Too bad I don't have a decent Win machine to compare it with. My mother's PC is wayyy to slow (no idea why - it should be loads faster. Not that I care, I'm not the families sysadmin).
Actually, I should care - I was the one that had to break off and rebuild the piece of trash - three times - because we needed the space (birthdays) - and she's accusing me of making it that slow (since it's that slow since those parties...).
My sister's PC's are even slower. They're old too.
My dad's PC is so unstable I don't even dare to touch it (it's bound to go wrong - that raid array is NOT a funny thing. It keeps failing. And he'll blame it on me too...).
My old PC (P133 or something - don't know for sure) won't boot in Win98 due to missing win.com (what the hell?). Unfortunatly, said P133-something also produces a kernel panic if combined with the redhat boot/install disk     I have no idea why.

Hmmm, I've got 7 computers running in my house and they have been for 5 years straight.  My electic bill is just fine.

Well, you're used to it.

Besides, that does save up on some other costs (heating for example - 99% of the energy they use is  transformed in heat. Light is the rest).

But still. Note that you can just ignore those costs - it's not like they're astronomical. It's just quite a lot.

Well heating is certainly not needed where I am at the moment.  It's about 115F with the heat index (98F without heat index).  My AC is eating up far more than my computers are.

congrats; i still use windoze for compatibility with Wife 1.0 (she is definately not computer-savvy, and she uses Lycos chat (the jave version sucks ass)   (http://smile.gif)   ); and the fscking win-printer (i have no luck getting the gs print driver to work with LPRng); and games are necessary.... when i want to play them.  I can't really get CM5000 to work right under wine; and the CIV II animations take a full three seconds per unit move thru wine.... really slow for 7 civ's with a full military running a war on 4 fronts....   ;)  .

good tcpa page beltorak0
-----------
it costs you more to nuke a hot dog vs. running a desktop computer all day

i just won an auction on a p2 system with redhat 7.3 preinstalled.  total cost:  $27 including shipping.

i think i can afford to leave it on. (once it gets here)
