I can't think of any OS out right now that can really complement this new processor. I want something that can really make good use out of it.

SuSE 9.1 Linux to feature 2.6 kernel
SuSE 9.1 is to be the first commercial Linux based on the 2.6 kernel. It is scheduled for release on May 6.
SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional delivers the latest Linux technology for standard 32-bit PC processors as well as for AMD Athlon* 64 and Intel* Extended Memory 64 Technology. SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal is delivered with a "LiveCD," a self-running Linux CD that lets Linux evaluators experience SUSE LINUX 9.1 on their systems without actually having to install it on their machines.
The new 2.6 Linux kernel enables the efficient distribution of hardware resources, for example guaranteeing high-quality music and video performance even as other applications are started and run simultaneously.
I use it at work.
It does take max out of those systems.

Wehl, with 3400+ proc, you can face Longhorn (http://tongue.gif)
It will not run smooth, but I hope you could be able to do some simple tasks with it (listen music, browsing internet)

There is an AMD 64 port of FreeBSD.

SuSE 9.1 sounds tempting, and KDE 3.2 looks sweet. Apparently the commcercial Professional version does not ship until may 8th.
Does anyone have an opinion on where I should download or buy it from?
-
Mandrake 9.2 also sounds pretty good. Commercially it is a little more, $100 instead of $89 for suSE. Does anyone have any first hand experience with either of these?
-
Well the Mandrake 9.2 is out now, but if you wait Suse 9.1 will have kernel 2.6 and (probably) KDE 3.2. May is next month...so wait. (http://smile.gif)

suse is great. and "SUSE LINUX Professional can be deployed on an unlimited number of machines - all of this for only $89.95." i want that thing. no more windows buying for me (unless the university forces me to). hopefully, win xp pro is the last thing i buy that has "microsoft" writen on it.
