i just want a small irc server that me and my friends can use instead of talking through aim, but how do i do this in linux? in the redhat8 install, there were many different servers, but not irc...

I just did a google search for "irc server daemon" and this is the first link that popped up:
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircd/ (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircd/)
I suggest you run the same search and see what you can find.

Personally I use UnrealIrcd. Check it out at http://www.unrealircd.com/ (http://www.unrealircd.com/)

sorry void...i guess i am getting kind of lazy...

Also, keep in mind your ISP may not allow hosting IRC servers, no matter how small. Better check out your ISPs plicy.
