Install gcc.
-
tried it....
Some package requested cannot be installed:
gcc-3.3.2-4mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libgcc[>= 3.3.2-4mdk])

Install libgcc.
That error message just means you have an unsatisfied dependency and need to install another package. Are you using mandrake? I think if you use urpmi to install packages it'll fetch and install all packages as necessary.

*** Warning: X development files not found. Wine will be built without
*** X support, which currently does not work, and would probably not be
*** what you want anyway. You will need to install devel packages of
*** Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least.
Configure finished. Do 'make depend && make' to compile Wine.
Install the X development headers and try again.

You need something like XFree86-devel

if you want to use windows software, why not just use windows?
-
running wine usually involves looking up
applications here http://appdb.winehq.org/ (http://appdb.winehq.org/) to
guide you though settings they may require..
also, compiling wine from source is typicly
not the path of least resistance. codeweavers and
transgaming both have installable packages of wine
that might work better.

you have to BUST YOUR ASS to make stuff work! you think the app is going to come with what you need? lol
NO!!! that's rule #1 of UNIX programming... require a bunch of stuff and not include it!
What, so the application should have everything it needs to run packaged with it? Like libraries, X-Windows... everything?

Because he doesn't want to use Windows, perhaps?

Okay, since this post I have formatted twice and re-installed linux. At the time I also did have all the files that were said to be needed.
Also, I'm not looking at it right now so I don't know who, but someone suggested Crossover Office. I used that for the thirty day trial and it made my computer very laggy. Just like Windows XP did for this computer before I had gotten rid of that. I found a lot of applications such as Internet Explorer 6 crash a lot. Simply by typing in URLs. I mean it says that the thirty day trial is the real deal nothing is held back. So it doesn't look too promising.

No, but it should be a drag-and-drop binary-only install. An app should ALWAYS have the binary option!
-
I forgot to say more.
The reason this is the way it should be... there are in fact people who use Linux to just get things done and not to dick around with some source code.
People like me.

But you said you didn't want any dependencies. The only way to avoid that is to package everything the application needs with the application.
And there's no reason he couldn't have installed wine binaries from an RPM or similar package, either he just chose to install from source or no packages have been produced.

You're right.
Guess what, I do drag-and-drop installs and NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEMS! IMAGINE THAT! SOMETHING THAT JUST WORKS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMMFG!

????????????
What made you think you can't do that in linux?
It's actually even more easy, you only need to click on a name(no drag-and-drop needed). ;)
-
what makes me think that? the fact that I've never had it work.
and no, using the installer is NOT better, because you cannot choose where to put it, because it has to go in one of the pre-determined folders.

I'm not a GNOME-fan, but this is how it looks:

Ah and Fury returned to MES, to see stupid conversations like this.
Jimmy: Things really aren't _that_ hard in Linux, although the part about not being able to put it where you want is very true. Hehe, just wait for Komodo to be released.
Ecsyle: People like some Windows applications that haven't been released for Linux. People also HATE Windows. People wanna use SOME Win apps in Linux. Same as on Erudition
Dood who started this thread: Why the fuck are you using IE on Linux. Use Mozilla or Konqueror or one of the other free and standard browsers. They work MUCH better than IE.
-
Jimmy you are truely a moron, UNIX is very different, you can change where things install, but there is no reason. In real UNIX style systems things are all in one place. Makes things a hell of a lot easier, and practicle.
But you are after all, a moron.
