Mandrake Linux, SuSE Linux. Are all pretty painless dirtros.
You could also dump your wintel box and switch to a Mac running OSX Jagwyre. You may be happy there as well (http://smile.gif)
Edit:
I missunderstood your post, you can get all your linux Distros at
linuxiso.org

Do yourself a favor and don't worry about trying to install Slackware. Download any of the other mentioned distros: Suse, Mandrake, Redhat.
Slackware, Gentoo, Debian, and others are not for a first timer to install.
-
thanks u guys! BUT how big are the files supposed to be.. i have 56k.. and im looking at 600 mB Dling??? jees..

Hmmm...
Well they are BIG. You can d-load them in a day if your up to it. But I would suggest just buying the Mandrake CD's from the site.
Also, I think VoidMain knows a place that will send your burns of Linux distro's for no more than the cost of the CD and S&P
What was that site Void?
Finaly, alot of linux folks are happy to burn and mail out distros. So maybe someone around here will help you out.
-
wow... well, im looking at a 4 day download.... im D/LING Mandrake ISO 9.0.. once I get the ISO, Do i Just burn it on to a CD, and when the cd pops out, THE ISO magically becomes the real cd? or what?
Good thing I have DAP, so i can pause meh D/L =D
-
Most distros are at least 3 CDs of around 650MB each (weeks to download over 56k). Find a friend or neighbor with Cable or DSL to download them for you. Otherwise buy them on-line.
-
wait tho.. ON Linuxiso.org the mandrake linux... well, do i only need to download CD 1 for 9.0? the rest is Internationalization and "extras"

In my experience, it's worth downloading it all. Those extras include everything from dumb little games to the latest video drivers etc.
Not to mention there are a bunch of usefull progs in it.
You may just wanna buy Mandrake from the site. You get tech support and stuff. It's only 30 bucks or so.
-
btw.. I can goto my dad's office... (T1) and maybe get it there... thats still a good hour or 2 heh. Anyways, Thanks you guys! This is now one of my fav websites =D
-
Hmm..... Well... I might not be able to get to my dads office for awhile... like 2 weeks... anyways, Im getting mandrake one way or another =D. Does it come with a setup program? Slackware... so hard... its like EDIT THIS AND PUT XXXROOTXX{SD or something...
-
Go HERE (http://www.linuxcentral.com) and you can buy them at very reasonable prices. They ship same day usually so you will get it quick. $5-$10 for most distros. Go into the LinuxCentral CD-Roms and you will find the cheap ones. (http://smile.gif)

Ya dude, it's a full on idiot proof GUI.
Not to say that problems wont occur. Linux isn't a cake walk, you will have to do alot of tinkering to get it set up like you like it. But if you stick to it you will be satisfied.
Just hang aorund lunx forums, and buy the O'Rilly Linux books online or at your local bookstore.
-
okay, thanks you guys!
Wait.. When i get this .ISO file.. do i just burn the ISO file onto a cd? and it'll turn the ISO file into the real cd when its done burning.. or??
Im not very good at these things > :(
but -- Im learning =D
-
There should be instructions on burning ISO's on the site. Usualy you use an app like Toast etc. And just select burn iso. It should work like that, like magic.
-
i would use nero to burn em dude
-
answer: no, do not just burn the iso onto a CD. some people do that and then... they have a big iso file on a CD! the iso file contains the data (filesystem and all) to go on the CD, so you need to make sure that your CD burning program knows to transfer the contents of the iso onto the CD, and not just the file itself.
re downloading vs buying, there are quite a few companies that will download a distro and burn it for you for a few bucks/pounds/euros/whatever. You just order online or mail order. search google to find one in your country. i recommend mandrake or red hat to begin with, or maybe SuSE or something, i haven't tried many of the other user friendly distros, mandrake was good enough for me so i stuck with it!
-
Anyone searching for cheap Linux retailers in any country, just go to http://www.linux.org/vendors/retailers.html (http://www.linux.org/vendors/retailers.html)
-
Hey! I just woke up and Mandrake is at 15% =D
-
Ok, i got nero.

it takes me about 3:30 for 3 ISOs on cable. So T1 would take probly an hour for all 3 CDs.
-
Okay, i can maybe go to his office Tomorrow.
Should I get all 3 CDS? And Since i have NO knowledge of linux code.... how hard is it to set up? Will it walk me through?

Yes you should get all 3 CDs. And don't worry about installation. Mandrake, SuSE and RedHat installations are easier than Windows ;)
-
You should burn the CDs as IMAGES. Nero may not recognise the image (because it wants images in Neros image format I think that's .nrg). Don't worry about this it will still work. Just make sure you burn an image not an ISO.
-
Odd.. i just finished installing NERO... and when I open it, it says DEMO HAS EXPIRED! PLZ PAY US SOME CA$H or something/... but I JUST downloaded it..? wtf?
-
heh, nvm, now im running the full version > (http://smile.gif) I d/led a key generator of kazaa
-
well whoopdeedoo for you.
you know once you get linux working you can use cdrecord and xcdroast which do the same job for FREE under a STABLE operating system.
a novelty, eh?
hope you don't like using duped serial numbers too much, you will be disappointed when you can get shedloads of fully featured stuff for free in linux...

hey there, im at my dads office now!
i started the downloads at 8 oclock today ( im downloading all 3 ISO's, the 700 MB one, the 680 one, and the 490 one) And Im kinda dissapointed... the 700 MB one is at 60% ( its 12 right now) and the 690 is at like 10% and the 480 is at like.... 4%..... Anyways, I wouldn't worry, because my dad's T1 is shared, he has an office right next to him that shares his bandwidth =\ BUT.. once the 700 mb one is down, the 690 one will go much faster....
BTW, LinuxISo.org... their mirrors are sucky.. or is it just my over loaded bandwidth =\
the best ive got so far is the DL with my700 mb ISO.. its going at like 31 kpbs...
now. when i leave my dads office DISK1 will probably be done. Will I be able to install disk 1, the installation disk. THen comeback tomorrow ( the downloads will be done) with the EXTRAS And internationalization disks? OR do they need to be installed all at once?
i really want the 700 mB worth of extras hehe
-
Right after the RedHat 8.0 ISOs came out linuxiso seemed to point directly to RedHat server and not the mirrors which meant "good luck". I found a good mirror and was able to download them in about 4 hours. It was one of the kernel.org mirrors. If I remember right it was ftp.pt.kernel.org.
-
yeah, the mirrors it has for mandrake... either really suck, or someone's downloaded hella porn or something at Stylelogic... (people next-door)
i mean, 1 of the files is going at 40 kpbs ( mind u im d/ling all 3 files from the same mirror)
the 2nd and 3rd ones are both going at like 5 kpbs..... slow, but steady. I mean, its OK, because i think when #1 is done d/ling, 2 and 3 will speed up, and anyways, ive d/led 80 MB just letting them sit there at like 4 kpbs..
-
Try here:
ftp://ftp.pt.kernel.org/pub/ (http://ftp://ftp.pt.kernel.org/pub/)
-
Odd...i canceled my download of the ISO extras... and decided to try a different mirror, on this currect mirror im d/ling at 12 kpbs...
I must have burned out that one mirror...
You think it'll die? Im downloading my mane 700 mb from it and im not using GOzilla or w/e.. so i cant pause / resume, so if it goes down, i lose 500 mb D/led
-
wow... i just tried that.. im getting 60 kpbs!
-
shit tho.. im on the wrong computer, the one with the cdburner is over there... whoops =]
-
damnit..... for some reason when i go tothatsite, it says WINDOWS CANNOT ACCESS..
520 TOO MANY USERS IN UR CLASS
or something... can u give me the direct link to download Mandrake Extras?
-
thatsodd... I must have to be on the admin account to access a FTP?
the other computer i was on ( my dads..., hes the admin,) It let me d/l.... and i just tried again.. you must have to be on an admin account.....hmmm
-
ftp://ftp.pt.kernel.org/.disk0/Mandrake/iso/Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso (http://ftp://ftp.pt.kernel.org/.disk0/Mandrake/iso/Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso)
-
ARGHH... iguess u gotta be on admin account...
EDIT: I cant log off, andlog onto the admin account ( I bet i could figure out the pass... or brute it =D.. or ask my dad haha ) but I wont be able to until my 70% of the 700 mb download isdone..... anyways, thanks for that FTP.. its amazingly fast... iwish i could go d/l off of it now..... but ill just wait 1 hour 58 min and 32 seconds for this one to finish.. then ill go on admin and d/l from that FTP.... it is ... really fast. Plus I was looking through what else ithad... *sPiFfY* hehe
thanksman

Well, if the machine is WinNT or Win2K it's easy to get Administrator access if you are already logged on as a normal user.
-
can I do it without switching accounts?
btw, im convinced it was just the mirror...i just dl/ed something else.. and BoOm

hey, just to be clever.. idownloaded dap, and did ADD URL and put in the file address.. it connects to download it, but then asks for a Username And Password... ugh... help me ouT?
-
After you get Mandrake downloaded go ahead and start downloading RedHat 8.0. If you are new to Linux I think you will like it.
Here's how to get Aministrator if you don't know the password:

Which is easier?
-
They are all easy to me but I've been doing Linux for 10 years.
-
does mandrake require any of this insane shit they call.. " code " to set up? I've seenmandrake screenshots , and it looks like windows to set up... will I need to know ANYTHING though? I mean like addrootxxdtjebhj [AGT#)(&T^ V or something?
-
No, but you are going to need to know a little bit about muffler bearings.
-
what are those...? can you give me a link i can readup while I wait?

That was mean void :D

  I donT understand... google isbeing evil when I searched for muffler bearings...
-
hey, when I install mandrake, will I be able to dual boot? When I boot up comp, it asks if i want mandrake or win2k running? and, since im downloading unreal tournament ( linux version demo ), its an unrecognized windows file type, ofcourse. So when i get mandrake running, using windows, should I burn unreal demo linux onto a cd, then once i have linux up and running, put the cd in? and it will recognize it?
-
I would start by reading the directions. If after reading the directions you have questions then come back and ask. As far as the dual boot question that is something that most people do and there are tons of threads on this forum about it. Look around. Even better, go to the web site for the distrobution you are going to install and read the install instructions. In addition to that look for dual boot instructions. I think you'll find it is very easy.

This might help explain it:

hey thanks! that really helped...
hey, will i be able to install mandrake just using the install ISO? Do i need extras and internationalization THE MINUTE i install it? I d/led the install disk, but ill d/l extras and internationalization over night and come back to my dads office in the morning to get them... i gtg =\
so can i? or will it cause problems?
-
I don't know where you are from so I don't know if you need the internationalizations. Normally all you need are the 2 or 3 installation ISOs and that's it. The first one is a bootable CD. You need to set your BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first and stick the first CD in the drive and reboot your machine. At which time the graphical installer will appear on your screen.
If you don't understand something or are nervous about it read the docs at the distro's web site for more information. It's pretty simple really as long as you pay attention and understand the few questions it asks you.
