Title: I want to try Linux
Post by: Pissed_Macman on 4 November 2002, 12:31
Thanks mostly to you Linux-heads my interest in Linux has been piqued. But is there any way to run it on a Macintosh? At Lunix.org it talks about mini distributions that run like programs, but is there a way I could install Linux and switch between it like I do OS X and OS 9?

its very possible. now i think that would be very cool. dual booting a mac. and hell, maybe you could have someluck with MOL/*mac on linux*/ its a vm that runs macos9.X. have phun, just make sure that you read on how to get it bootable, cuase i know that certian macs need some strong magic to get them to boot anything other then linux. and make sure the mac is compatible.

Lunix is for a commodore.

here is a list of PPC(mac) Linux(es): http://old.lwn.net/Distributions/index.php3#ppc (http://old.lwn.net/Distributions/index.php3#ppc)
Mandrake also will run on PPC

Of course there is. Right now I'm dual booting Yellow Dog Linux and OS X with yaboot (yet another bootloader). YDL has a dead easy installation routine since Apple's hardware is standardised so give it a try.   ;)

PS. The only problem I have is with my ZIP drive which doesn't have a /dev entry and I'm desperately trying to find a way to mount the sob. Any ideas?

what does PPC actually mean? which machines will it run on? (chip numbers, and layman's terms, eg G3 and so on please!)

also, i just tried and lunix.org doesn't exist! maybe you were looking at Lunix.com (http://www.lunix.com/lunix.htm), or perhaps it was the Lunix page at sourceforge (http://lng.sourceforge.net/) you saw?

Thanks for reminding me about lunix actually, i think i might try it myself!

Maybe you entered the URL wrong, Calum. I'm looking at Linux.org right now.

Sorry, my zip drive was mysteriously murdered years ago. You should try a tech support forum or something.
