So ok, you got rid of Windoze and all your M$ software, but all your firends are still using MSN Messenger - I had this problem, i couldnt find a decent msn messenger client for Linux.
Here's a list of some i use now.
GAIM - Comes with Mandrake, simple, ugly, no file sending
Everybudy - Also come with Mandrake, even uglier then GAIM, but it does support file sending.
Kmerlin - Download from SorceForge. Looks smart, is wicked. Full functionability, ie uyou can send files and it even has the groups/tabs like the new msn messenger versions. Worth Getting.

use gaim. the new version (0.61) has everything you want, multiple protocols, file sending/receiving, a slick gtk2 interface.

yep, aim kicks botty. but if you want a program that is a real msn lookalike, get amsn from amsn.sourceforge.net (i recommend gaim over it though, gaim is a lot more versatile).

noo0o0o, not amsn! lolz!
I forgot to mention this one - i tired it first, and it sucks!
It looks like msn, and certainyl acts like it !
PS: it cant run without terminal

Get the source RPM and rebuild it. GTK 2 is there on Mandrake, just that the way the regular RPM looks for it, it doesn't find it for some reason.

I downloaded the source and installed iut no problem.
PS: if you install GAIM using the source, as i did, and you still have previous GAIM, when typing Run > GAIM you will still get the old game.
Create a shortcut to '/usr/local/bin/gaim'

Open menudrake as root
Edit the system menu
Add amsn to the menu
There, now it can run without the terminal. :eek:

i never had any problems running it without a terminal, what the hell kind of problems are you having?

My personal thought was :
Poster didnt have amsn in the menu.
So to run amsn he had to open a terminal.
As the terminal was running amsn if he closed the terminal so would amsn.
Correct me if any of this is wrong...

oh yeah, but still, wouldn't you figure out pretty quickly that that was the reason?
why not just have a runbox on your taskbar or whatever (or a button that brings up a runbox) for those one word commands?

not everyone knows that runbox is there, especially not someone new to linux.
no offence but you know when sometimes people claim that linux users are elitist? this could be one of those times... i'm not saying it was on purpose but you didn't really consider the fact that this was someone reasonably new to our favorite OS...

ok, (hangs head) i'm sorry.
i just assumed people would know about the runbox because it's in all the win32 systems on the start menu.
i'll try not to be elitist again!

At a time gaim CVS had patchy support for sending/recieving on MSN, this was very dodgy and got removed.
It returned in 0.60 but only to recieve files.
In 0.61 I noticed that file recieve often crashed gaim.
0.62 has just released which may have imporved this, although the changelog does nto specifically mention it.
0.67 does not exist.
I belive amsn is more reliable for file transfers but gaim is a better overall client and is multi-protocol and does not remind you of windows.

The new Gaim looks nice, but its a shame about its filesending/receiving. it always crashes for me.

a program called Kopete came preinstalled on the SuSE 8.1 distro I bought, works great really simple to use, but no file sharing. Im pretty sure you can pick it up from a KDE web site or sourceforge.
I had allota problems with gaim, but I'm dumb. :D

yeah that's right now i think about it, amsn does do file transfers, and it does them well, why the hell can't gaim just sort itself out when the work has already been done in amsn (another GPL project)?

Calumb have you seen Kmerlin?
It looks so smart, and the enwest version has file sending (shame i cant upgrade, cos im on KDE3.0)
