Title: fucking pawn shop
Post by: Stryker on 9 August 2003, 04:27
I took my computer to the pawn shop to see if i could sell it, i've been trying to go on this trip for a while and i still need more money. He was very impressed with it. The specs were better than anything he's had in his shop before. I was just about ready to close the deal for about $450 (not bad for a pawn shop), until he turned it on. Of course it had linux on it, a perfect installation. All hardware was supported and I even had a modem in there that would work with linux. He shut it off, told me no and to get out of his store (basically). He only takes computers that "have windows xp or better". Wouldn't it be illegal for me to include windows with it anyways?

from the eula of windows xp corporate edition

arg, i dont really have any questions... i'm just here to bitch. Anyone know of a good place to sell a computer?

There isn't any problem, Linux does count as windows xp or better.

Well if he needs to sell it to some conformist Windows user he can always do the amazingly complex technical procedure known as a "format and install."
Or just ask:

maybe the patented Jimmy James "GIANT BOMB (TM) (C) (R)" is what he needs?

it's guaranteed to blow up the entire store and replace it all with a nice, minty scent

AFAIK I know with Windoze, if you got it with the PC, you can sell the PC with Windoze, and you aren't supposed to install it on any other computers (of course, XPee enforces this).  If you bought the crap separately, you can sell it however you like.  If you got a pirated corporate version, well, then you can't sell it you should just be quiet, that shop owner looks like the kinda guy that'd love to squeal to M$ on ya.  He won't take the computer 'naked' (i.e., with no OS), will he?  If he was reputable, that's the only deal he'd settle for in case of any licence shit.  Then he'd get a new licence from M$, or put a desktop Linux distribution on it for $0.  But if this is a pawn shop, why does he give such a shit about what OS is on it?

Classified ads. I'd buy it for $450 if I had the money to spend, especially if it's faster than a PII.

Because it's a pawn shop. He has to be able to sell it. Perhaps hes' got some thing against Linux?

sell it on eBay.

I sold my laptop on eBay, i simply didn't mention what system it had on it (although i did say it comes with a CD of drivers for all modern versions of windows) - when the guy bought it he found it had 4 linuxes, one FreeBSD and FreeDOS on it and he emailed me in a fit complaining he didn't know any of the passwords! i had to tell him how to get a bootdisk so he could fdisk all my partitions away (and who knows, maybe he's happily XPing away to this day!)

i've tried ebay, the first time i set it to $400... i got 40 looks and no bids. the second time i set the price to 1 penny and the reserve to 400... it got up to $381. It's worth a lot more than that, and I need at least $400... actually, i need $430 now to cover those ebay fees.

edit:

less than a day left on this one, i figured if i could get that $381 i would survive.

personally i would start it at 200 and let them bid up*, let the auction go for 10 days rather than 7, and don't tell people you built it yourself. also play down the whole windows linux thing. just stick linux on, include any windows drivers CDs you have and let them figure it out once they've got hold of it.

and that's not cruel, i think you're doing them a favour personally.

just my thoughts, not sure if they help at all.

*it's my experience that a thing tends to sell for a higher price if the starting price is higher, but that if you don't leave a decent amount of room for bidding then nobody bids at all

well actually i could do with a computer like that, but what with me being in england and not having any room to put it in anyway, that kind of knocks it on the head.

also don't take me at my word, that's just what i would do if i was listing this. also, not so sure about the please take it bit, people think there's something wrong with it if you appear too eager to get rid of it.

remember you are selling mainly confidence in the product, rather then the product itself. think what sort of things you'd want to read in the advert if you were looking to buy a computer of this sort yourself.

look sorry, i'm getting all whiny and pretentious, sorry to butt in like this. the best of luck to you in selling it anyway.
