My problem is that on my Intel 855GM/PM chipset laptop, with SUSE9.1 Kernel 2.6.4-52 , the Video does not resume after S3 resume. I have tried a lot of forums and this seems to be a common problem. I am using an ATI graphics card.
The OS is up, because i can ping the system on a network, but the display is lifeless.
Any solutions/suggestions?

Welcome to our forum (http://smile.gif)
In order to help you, we need to know when the screen goes blank. Is it before, or after you start up X?

I think she means after the display has gone into standby or sleep mode it dosn't wake up again.
I have had this problem to under Windows, on both my old PC and laptop.
The PC had an ATI card, I found that turning the monitor off and on again and hitting a few keys worked for me. I know it wasn't a problem with the monitor as I still use the same monitor with my new PC.
But as for the laptop I'm sorry I can't help you, the screen went blank and nothing would turn it back on. I knew it hadn't crashed as when I plugged it into my monitor it worked. I can't remember what graphics card the laptop used, When I get home I will check.
I have a sneaky suspicion they both used similar ATI cards.

Do ATI cards work well under Linux?

Quick and simple:
No. (Well, maybe with the generic ATI driver, but not the accelerated one.)

I'm sure ATi cards will work okay, but don't expect to play UT 2004 with it. There drivers aren't ready for that kind of stuff.

The screen goes blank after we resume from S3, and it doen't matter whether we start X or not. It happens also in failsafe mode, where its just text.
Well probably it is not a Graphics Driver problem after all. Coz it doesn't matter whether you plug an external card or not ( or even use internal graphics, such as for the 855GM chipset) the same problem occurs.

Although i have not had the same problem on Windows, but here the culprit seems to be the Linux ACPI driver support. I have checked the problem on a DELL PC too, and its the same there too....
I looked for some workarounds, probably patches but none available as of now, doesn't look like a BIOS problem either, coz the same Bios runs well on WinXp.

strange...
I'm guessing that when you set the system to standby... the power light on the display goes off, blinks, turns gold... it does something to indicate that it has also entered standby?
so... when the computer resumes... does the display also wake up but simply display nothing... or does it fail to power up?

Aloown3d. :D
This is probably ACPI coding issues. The 2.4 kernel had "alpha" ACPI and 2.6 is only so far along.
Try getting a new kernel update from Yast..or is -52 the latest?

In the upcoming days I soon will have to install Linux on a system with an ATI card.
How reassuring this is.

The ATI card won't give you any problems.
They just have very bad(slow) drivers.

I agree, it will work, my 3D Savage pro was retardedly slow under Linux but it worked.

It's an ACPI problem.
There exist an utility called PostVGA to solve this.
I don't know if it works for ATI.

The default ATI driver provided by X.Org/XFree86 isn't as bad as the official ATI driver - but, it isn't accelerated.
