Title: SuSE Yast question
Post by: Ice-9 on 17 September 2002, 01:04
This will probably be for RudeCAt7 (or any other SuSE user) :)
I updated my system a few weeks ago with Yast2, and now since 1 week 1/2 every time I try to do another online update it hangs for a while on "Getting server list from www.suse.de" (http://www.suse.de) and then I get "Initialization failed, try another ftp/http server".
Problem is, it displays that same message with every different ftp address I enter.
Are you able to do an online update or is Yast broken atm?
I'm using 8.0 btw.

Another SuSE user! Great! Well, Ice9 I too have SuSE 8.0 and I've also been having the same problems for the past week when trying to use YOU (YAST Online Update)! I really don't know what's wrong! I've tried changing ftp servers (ftp.leo.org or ftp.suse.com etc) but nothing  :(  !However, I did manage two days ago to connect to the suse.com ftp server but it froze in the middle of downloading the updates    . Now, I'm thinking of contacting SuSE since this is really getting on my nerves

Hah, Pantso, I forgot about you when I thought of the SuSE users on the board ;)
Your nick was Hoochjoons a while ago, wasn't it?
If so you already provided me with help when I couldn't see my ouse cursor a few moths back    ;)
And if not, hiya!   (http://smile.gif)
Edit : I'mprolly wrong here, think I mixed you up with Panos! Sry about that.
Nice to know I'm not alone having this problem, at least I know the last online update I did didn't screw up    :D
Or if it did, it did for a lot of people and SuSE are probably aware of it and very busy correcting things.

Yep, that's me! I'm glad you remember  (http://smile.gif)  You have a very strong memory and you're also very observing! I decided to stop using my old account which I first renamed "Panos" (and which by the way is my real name  ;)  ) just to make a new start in the boards. So I decided to go under the nickname "Pantso". I'm glad you noticed

  ;)

I can't help with 8.0 because I am still enjoying 7.3.

I did the online update, and it went without a hitch. That's all I know.

I think that something is fucked up with their servers, or that you just have to use YOU at a certain point in the day.  I have SuSE 8.0, and the first three times I tried it, it didn't work. It worked the fourth time, and has worked ever since...

wierd..........

Well I guess I have no other option than keep trying when I get home until it works.
The company I work for is so pro-M$ it makes me puke sometimes, so there really is no chance of me trying a Linux online update here    :(
I have a day off on Friday so basically I will have all day to try and connect.
Thanks for the feedback.

YOU finally worked  (http://smile.gif) ! I discovered that it kept freezing when I was trying to download KDE 3.0.2. However, I don't know if that was really the problem.

Anyway, it finally worked   :D

The ftp server I used: ftp.suse.com
