Yay, im very excited about today. later, I am finally getting Red hat Linux 9! (its my birthday). Ive had it up to the sky with fucking windows and its crashes. My friend has Win98, and it crashes if too many programs are open, or if its on for longer than 5 minutes! he needs to get a Linux. my fucking Windows 2000 crashes explorer because i open a folder, and im sick of it...must have linux. Ill let u all know how it goes later today on this thread.

Moving from Windows 98 to Linux to get rid of crashes is like moving from Kansas to San Francisco to get rid of earthquakes.
-
MichaelSoft, congratulations, you have just taken a step into a larger world.
69waluigi69, either you have never used Linux and and don't know what the fuck you are talking about, which would it very very stupid to post what you did, or you are here intentionally trying to piss people, or both, which would also make you a very stupid and immature person. Go away. (http://redface.gif)

Actually I live in Kansas and a few years ago we had a very small earthquake http://www.kcstar.com/item/pages/home.pat,local/30dafb6b.513,.html (http://www.kcstar.com/item/pages/home.pat,local/30dafb6b.513,.html)

Or maybe more like fighting a war with sticks and stones instead of nukes. In case you're colorblind it says at the top of the page "fuckMicrosoft.com", not "Be a Fucking Idiot, Post Lies, and Worship Bill Gates".

Perhaps he actually is Bill?

Not quite. It's gotten better. I'm now running it in a terminal and with no uptime client. That linup one is so damned screwed. :( So at the moment the 98 had an average uptime of 20-30 days, and so far Linux has an average of 3-12 hours.
It's been serving files just fine, but if I try to just log in it'll just sit there. That, and I still need to get the FTP server to work.

Proof positive that the best linux system can be taken down by a bad admin.

Wow,
I am utterly offended by what 69waluigi69
just said. He is such a dumb ass. Mostly b/c i hate stupid people, someone needs to take him out of the gene pool.
Congrats Matt, Linux has yet saved another from the darkside. If you value stability, then you should be more than satisfied w/ Linux. I'll be glad to help any newbie out. Mostly b/c you have to get them to try it b4 you get them hooked.

i agree totally, and this is no throwaway quip here either, fettid fred has a prejudice against linux and tends to blame any problems he/she encounters on the system itself rather than his/her own ignorance (which i suspect is often the cause). This is not intended as an insult towards fett, since most people are ignorant about most things. the problems start to arise when people get pissed off when they fuck things up and then start blaming others, in this case others who have worked long and hard so people like fett could have a totally free and open source system to run as a server et c.
-
I haven't blamed Linux once, but I'm not the only person to have a problem with linup. Either way, I've been told thet it's impossible to freeze a Linux box completely and totally.
-
In my experience it is impossible to freeze linux in text mode. There's got to be something wrong with your hardware.

heh...try killing init on bootup. kernel panics suck (i've had a total of 3 so far, 2 of them from something stupid i've done intensionally or unintensionally. the other just surprised me (was with redhat8))
-
Man, I've never had one kernel panic... ever. And i've been using linux for over 2 years. Maybe it's because I dont' go around typing "killall init" as root, or something.
I've had X freeze on me though (I blame the nvidia drivers that were out at the time) It doesn't happen with the new drivers, fortunately. I've never gotten Red Hat Linux 8 or 9 to crash. And I leave my computer on all day, too.
