So sayeth my friend who adamantly believes windows is great. I personally hate it because i have CONSTANT problems.
But anyway, I dont know too much about linux (i would love to try it though), so could someone give me some plus's that linux has over windows so i can at least prove him somewhat wrong.

Bah. A lotta PC's are only as good as the person who uses them.
-
Some people will never like linux, so lets not worry about them.

Get Linux, it's not that hard. Check out www.tldp.org (http://www.tldp.org) for ANY help at all. If you have something that's completely unsolveable, check out one of any number of help forums.

Here's a Linux version which loads from CD, doesn't touch your hard disk and still kicks ass!
Download now: ftp://ftp.knoppix.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/knoppix/ (http://ftp://ftp.knoppix.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/knoppix/) (make sure you download one with EN, not DE ;) )

Knoppix is very good. Gentoo Live is also excellent. I've used them both on an Apple iBook (the hard drive played out and I thought that a Live CD distro would be a great way for it to see some action.

Oh really? So what happened to the usual Microsoft-advocate boast of "anyone can use Windows"?

Anyone can "use" Windows, but the quality of their experience depends on how well the administrator does his job.
Though really... i never boasted that anyone can use Windows. If you want ease of use for the braindead, try a Mac. (which will then mean you're restricted when it comes to hardware, software, and various things because most people don't use them)

<zealot>Except open source software, that you can compile on your computer wether or not you have apple, linux, windows, or bsd.</zealot>

Pluses of Linux:
- Most of the software included is not controllable by any one entity or person, giving you freedom of choice
- It's open source, if you want to change it you can.
- it's Faster, Stryker at least gave us SOME proof with his little counting benchmark
- very reliable, systems can run for literally years with Linux (although the highest uptimes usually go to BSD-based servers)
- Linux has a literally huge community of people that can help you with problems
- Linux is prettier than Windows in a lot of ways (minus some translucency eye candy right now)
- Linux still supports some Windows applications using WINE if you cant find better alternatives natively (Photoshop works near flawlessly, Flash MX works although a little slow, many other major apps have support)
- Linux is beginning to catch mainstream in an important way. You'll be riding the wave of the next generation. All your friends who think Windows owNz will have to eat their words when they finally switch to Linux or buy a PC with Linux etc
- Linux has better applications. IE sucks, Firebird owns. Office is nothing compared to OpenOffice imho
- Your favorite open source Windows applications are developed for Linux first, for instance GAIM (if you aren't using it for instant messenging, you should be), OpenOffice, Firebird etc
- Linux runs on older hardware much better
- Linux runs on newer hardware much better (my Linux box runs games twice as fast as when I boot to Windows)
- Linux is much less expensive. There are MANY free distributions available for download, and many inexpensive commercial distributions
- Linux doesn't contain spying software from Microsoft
- Linux is flexible enough it can be run from a CD, installed to your hard drive, isntalled to your USB key drive even.
- Linux has quicker development cycles, if you get bored of your current version, don't worry there will probably be a new release soon. And for many commercial distributions you can get free upgrades
Thats just a few. I know I missed a lot.

MS doesn't write most software for thier OS either.

Provided you have programming knoledge.

That depends on a person's taste.

Both those aps are available on Windows, and many Linux apps have an unfinished feel.

Provided the company writes Linux drivers.

Good points there Fett101.
I use XP most of the time, but theres a linux box next to me, and theres a freebsd box in my room, and a Dec Vax running OpenVMS.
