Title: Joliet filesystem

Hi all,

Can someone pls tell me if it's a must to burn CD's using the Joliet file system? I use ISO9660 along with joliet when burning. What would happen if i dont? I find joliet truncating some long file names...Also, will if CD become un-readable if joliet is not used?

Btw, i'm using mkisofs

Well, actually Joliet isn't a filesystem. It's just an M$ extention to iso9660. Disc will be readable in any case but native iso9660 has limit 8.3 (yes, like ms-dos) for filenames. Jouliet has limit of 64 symbols and as it's just an extention it will be readable even as native iso9660 but in this case long filenames will be cut.

Just a slight clarification....from what I understood.

Using Joliet will truncate the filename after 64? and using ISO9660 will truncate the filename after 8.3?

So basically, using Joliet will allow me to keep a bigger filename correct?

Quite so. There are some more extentions, for example, Rock Ridge or ISO Level 2, but if you want to get readable disk for any platform, Jouliet is the only choice.
