Title: Need some ideas for a new network
Post by: Doogee on 9 January 2004, 19:02
Ok i currently have a 4 port ADSL router, all these ports are full.

When i get unlimited adsl (very soon) im going to want to run a webserver and stuff through it. the thing is i dont have the money to go and buy myself a hub so ive got more ports.

What i was wondering is that if there was a way to put two NICs in my server computer (which will be a p2 300, my main pc is a celery 700) and then run my celery into one nic and then the other nic goes to the ADSL router, providing my main PC with the internet (and probably a nifty firewall) while still runing a working webserver.

Of course the server will run linux.

Yes,

That's a fairly typical use.  You'll have to read HOWTO's on routing w/ Linux, and you might want to read up on ip tables so you can create the firewall necessary.

Good Luck

Thanks, this is a long term project seeing dad is borrowing the computer that is going to be my server.

Ill probably need help all the way through because im a big time networking newbie.

EDIT: Sorry, but i honestly dont even know what im looking for, apparently my ADSL router has a firewall in it so lets forget about the linux box as a firewall. Can you point me in the right direction because i get the this TLDP site and i dont know what to look for!

Why not just buy a cheap 4 port hub? it won't cost much more and you'll get better connectivity.

Or are you trying to set up a DMZ?

Boy do I love Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/).

quote:
Demilitarized Zone - network or part of a network, separated from other systems by a firewall which allows only certain types of network traffic to enter or leave. In a typical example, a company will protect its internal networks from the internet with a Firewall, but will have a separate DMZ to which the public can gain limited access.  Public web servers might be placed in such a DMZ.

One the router or the hub, one port will be marked as uplink. this is either a spearate port, or there is a button to toggle a specified socket (usually the first or last) to either uplink or normal mode.

You put one device on uplink and chain it onto the other device with normal CAT5 patch, simple  (http://smile.gif)

Yea id just get a second hub, you can use an ethernet bridge in Linux and the computer will pretty much act like a 2 port hub.

My network:

Cable ethernet --> Linux router --> Switch --> Computer 1 + Computer 2

You run BNC based ethernet?

My network used to use a little fiber, BNC, AUI, and cat5e, now it all just uses CAT5E stuff.
