Hello all,
I am new here and would just like to say happy holidays to you all,
I unfortunately have an MSI ms-6373, the original nForce and when i first got it tried to install linux mandrake and it told me i couldnt.
Is there anyway i could get any linux to be installed? I have recently downloaded knoppix linux i think it is.
Also what if i decide to upgrade to the nForce 2 or 3 in the future?
Anyone help would be great, and aplogise if this is in the wrong place!

It should install fine, mandrake is gay, try knoppix, or get Fedora or Slackware (real distros).
Men use slackware.

First of all, welcome to the boards and secondly, happy holidays to you as well (http://smile.gif)
Now, I don't know of any drivers about your graphics card or chipset, but the first place to start is the Xfree86 project (http://www.xfree86.org), and see if your card is supported under the latest Xfree86 implementation, currently 4.3.0
If you can't find any drivers or any support documentation for your graphics card, then you might want to look the documentation for Xfree86 3.3.6, which is an older version, which supports many discontinued cards, and which ships with all distributions, at least the major ones.
In the case that all else fails, use the VESA or fbdev generic driver during the installation procedure. Also, try to make sure that you have correctly set up your monitor or if it was correctly probed.
Contrary to X11, I strongly recommend using eiher Mandrake Linux, SuSE Linux, or any other RedHat distribution prior to Fedora, which is definitely not ready yet.
These are the most friendly to install distros, especially SuSE Linux 9.0. Stay away from Debian or Slackware, eventhough Libranet which is Debian-based has a very good installer, contrary to Debian's one.

I personally use an nForce2 (I don't have a built-in vcard, though), and it's working out great. (My computer runs Slackware, but it really shouldn't matter.)
When you install Mandrake, it will probably not be able to load up X-Windows, except maybe with generic VGA drivers. Boot up into command line, and downloadthis driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261). Follow the instructions, modify XF86Config, start X, and violla--a perfectly functioning system!

Oh, and I forgot. You'll need to install the GART patch. Instead of using menuconfig, try doing "make old," then edit the configuration file to make it comply with the instructions. It's easier that way.
