Hello all (http://smile.gif)
Was just wondering how I can convince my (primarily XP using) friends that Linux is great? They seem consigned to just put up with their dodgy OS, rather than go through the effort of learning how to use a new better OS. Their main arguments are that linux has quote pathetic games support end quote and that it would not be worth the effort of backing up partitioning installing learning a new OS. How can I, a mere newbie, show them the light of this wonderful OS?
BTW, to whom it may concern thanks for the _fantastic_ site, and would any of you guys/gals mind if I ask some newbie questions about linux stuff? At the moment I am still very much in the learning phase... (I will of course try and remember to rtfm :D )

flog them down until they are "convinced"
welcome to the boards, feel free to ask any questions you need to. A lot of people i know are tired of having their OS fuck up every day

I think it's more important that people not use Microsoft products than that they specifically use Linux. (I just happen to think that Linux is the best free alternative, which is why I use it.)
Have you told your friends how crap Microsoft is? If they have a smidgen of ethics in their bodies, they wouldn't want to touch any of that company's products ever again. Not even with a ten-foot pole.
If that doesn't work, try something like Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html).

thanks for the idea Master, (lol) actually flogging some of my friends sounds fun... 8-)
and speaking of an OS fucking up I was too scared of screwing over my data to install linux originally... but then an XP screw up corrupted my hdd... shoved it in a friends computer as slave and could only recover the stuff i wasnt desperate to save... I must remember to thank Bill for screwing me over, removing the only obstacle to a linux install and pissing me off enough to try a fantastic OS... he has actually done something for me after all!
BTW, love the Bob page...
-
thanks Nobber... I think I may actually be converting all the ethical ones... then again all the unethical ones are using cracked versions of XP and loads of warez... (you mean you want free software, you just dont want free software that WORKS???) 8-)

i've gotten so far 3 of my friends to try to install linux. one of them actually had it before i knew what linux was, but couldn't use it, and the others know nothing of computers, so i have a lot of work getting them prepared for linux. one of my best friends screwed up his computer and i'm trying to fix it right now, but i keep getting many errors that makes me think that it is a hardware problem, which will not be good cause i voided the warrenty :( by trying to fix it.
anyway, it shouldn't be too hard to convice ppl that linux is better, especially if they know you are good w/ computers and help them out.
hey master-- what is bob?

hi!
First of all, u are not supposed of going around convincing people to use linux..People should understand the GNU model and the idea behind free software.
One should'nt care less if ur using linux. Also, linux is only the kernel, and was put into the incomplete GNU OS which Dr Stallman has worked for so much.
The GNU movement is not about building something mean against Microsoft. It's all about freedom from the shackles of proprietory software and of course ethics.
We have to make people understand of what GNU is and how to contribute back to the community.
Pls head over to www.gnu.org (http://www.gnu.org) and understand the concepts throughly.
thanks,

My question is that after they have been working on Hurd for so long now, will it be something revolutionary, or will it fail due to the success of linux?
-
Ask the people what it's worth to them to have a (virtually) viru-free OS ... I do, especially after people have encountered lots of frustration after their Outlook Express encountered another worm viru ... :D
-
It is VERY VERY inportant that u specify and make it clear that it is Free as in Freedom and NOT something to do with paying zero or no money at all....When u say, that it's free in terms of money, pl get the idea that its some cheap stuff etc..
Though its difficult, they NEED to understand and grasp the concepts of GNU..
thanks,
007

I had asked the a similar question to Dr Stallman when he had come down to India, but he seemed to avoid the question and did'nt give a very convincing answer..
Once its complete though, I guess we would have to start calling it GNU/Hurd instead of GNU/Linux.
Oh well, the whole process would start all over again and the saga continues......

Thinking of joining the cult of Bob Master of Reality? But thinking is wrong! 8-)
No probably not, ramming my head into a wall and eating hamsters does not sound like fun!
Sorry agent 007, I will try and mend my newbie ways. 8-(
What is Hurd?
Virus free is kinda good wuck... no more virus scans taking up over two hours of my time... But as linux becomes more popular with people wont the [expletive]heads that write virus' start writing some for linux? I had got the (tell me if im wrong) impression that linux was virus free because certain ppl want to do the most damage... and doing the most damage meant damaging the most popular OS. If virus writing for linux becomes popular wont everyone be caught by surprise? I mean there are no linux virus scanners... like i said correct me if im wrong.

Please ignore the what is hurd question... I have just found the hurd website.

We've been over this many times on this forum. Popularity of the OS really has nothing to do with it's susceptibility to viruses. Compare Apache to IIS for web servers. Apache is the web server software used by more than twice as many internet sites than IIS (Microsoft's web server software). Yet Apache has only had a tiny fraction of exploits to IIS. The same is true with Linux. Linux like UNIX is designed with security in mind. Microsoft OSs and applications are not.
Linux could be running on 100% of the desktops and like the Apache/IIS comparison would only have a tiny fraction of problems that Windows has with viruses. Viruses just can't work in Linux like they do in a Microsoft environment. And as I have stated many times in the past I have yet to see my first true virus in Linux or UNIX. And I have been working with Linux for almost 10 years and UNIX for longer than that (when UNIX systems outnumbered Windows). Viruses have been part of Microsoft operating systems since the first version of DOS and they still don't give a shit about it.

Thanks for the explanation void man. Feel much better now... I have had lots of viruses on windows and I could never seem to kill off the little buggers.

Ethics? Not using MS stuff is not always about ethics.
Imagine it as the semi-corrupt mentality(for lack of a better term). You would use Wind0ze if it truly was awesome, but was still tied to MS's corrput practices. It is all about you, not the greater good. MS's corrupt practices don't affect you, but a shitty OS sure does. So the corrupt d00dz hop aboard the anti-MS/Linux bandwagon and say "f0ck this! No one shall screw me over!".
This ideal I listed above is the embodiment of Lazygamer, someone who has little ethics, feels no wrong in his heart for being a warez d00d(like Chaos mentioned), but shan't let ANYONE screw him over. So basically, joining the revolution is the only way to not be screwed over. (http://smile.gif)
