I would suggest getting/supporting a local provider if at all possible. There should be listings in your yellow pages. Or ask friends who might have something other than AOL.
Failing that, search google for "ISP YourStateOrPrivince Area Code Prefix".
Failing that try this:
http://thelist.internet.com/ (http://thelist.internet.com/)
Once you find one, verify that they use standard PPP connections and do not require a software client, which should allow Linux to connect just like a standard install of Windows without requiring any other software to connect.

k. whats average price?? i dun want to over pay!!!

All ISPs support Linux and Windows, except MSN (actually, in does, if you call them, but you shouldn't do it) and AOL (this includes Prodigy).
The average price is below AOL's (usually about $10-$15).

Depends on how good the service is. I pay $54 USD for 3 months of service which figures out to $18 a month for a dialup connection. I get unlimited time online, very few disconnects, free web space, full support and it supports internet sharing all for the single price. That is very good for a dialup service. On top of everything else they run standard ppp connections so I can connect easily from linux or windows.
Find a service local to you that offers a simular package at a simular price to what my ISP does and you will have a very good deal.
Another benefits which helps my wife alot is they scan all email for virus's. It does not matter to me but it is important to her, she likes windows.
Also I get like 3-4 pop3 accounts with that service.

Any isp worth doing business with should be cheaper than AOL.

freeserve are one i am not sure about, i connect to my flatmate's freeserve service at home using my linux computer, i just got him to tell me his login, password and telno, but recently something happened (well, we all moved house) and i can no longer connect, my flatmate was saying something about he needed to run his freeserve CD again to reconnect? Anyway this boils down to: freeserve provide proper ppp access, but you cannot set up the ppp access unless you run special freeserve software (i wonder if they provide linux/BSD versions?)
I checked their site and they seem to provide a lot of windows help but a search for linux turns up fruitless. Interestingly, both of their sites uses Apache on Solaris.
[edit - i emailed them and asked them, we'll wait and see...]
Now, i realise this was a little off topic, since freeserve are regional however all good ISPs are regional, so let's not have this post of mine derided as a 'flame' shall we? those of us who want to stop public discussion on a public discussion board should go and join the nazi mods over at the windows BS.

I have DSL, for around $40 per month (there are four users so that works out at $10 per month each for the far better service (get that, in this situation DSL is CHEAPER then AOL). If you can try that then do. No where can I find mention of Linux for their service, yet I don't use M$ Windows. And I have not installed any software and I have not called their service support staff. It's all inclusive with Mandrake 8.2.

One of my friends has prodigy. It uses standard PPP so I rigged her Linux box to connect to it with kppp, no problems.

actually thats not true in all those cases. while all those you named do have software that you CAN use.. you dont have to (except on AOL). you can do prodigy, MSN, and earthlink (only one of those 3 ive done personally) with linux.

ISP's get cheap in Austraila, mine isnt exacly cheap, but the service is resonable, I will not be going with them for ADSL because they use Microsoft.
Actually, i live in australia, blue mountains to be precise and ive got adsl (Telstra) and im posting from Galeon in linux. So theres no excuse not to get ADSL.
