Title: OS 9 is DEAD!
Post by: psyjax on 7 May 2002, 04:08
That's what Jobs said this morning.

He also officialy introduced the new OS X:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/may/06jaguar.html (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/may/06jaguar.html)

Sounds cool. Only thing is that iChat crap.

I hope when they say integrated, they don't mean IE iintegrated. I don't want to have to tear it out with a pair of dental pliers.

I must have missed something when i read the page. I
didn't see Jobs say that at all. I was under the
impression that people that use a Mac still needed OS
9 for older programs. That that was the reason OS 9 is
still shipped with new Mac computers.

One other thing if I may? Buy a Mac now, or wait for
the G5?? I know that it is supposed to be some time
before the G5 is out but I was just wondering.

(I wanted my first post to be something wonderful -
but this was all I could think of)

www.idevgames.com (http://www.idevgames.com)

Look for the anouncement on the main page. It has a description of the Expo and some links.

G5 is supposed to be the next big release. But for now, it's vaporware. Tho, rumer has it they top 2ghz.

I guess that's cool. But I don't see why 1Ghz is not adequet for the avarege user? Hell Why isn't 500Mhz?

Classic is quite enough for running most pre-X applications. This announcement is solely meant for developers, not users -- it's unlikely Mac OS 9 third party dev will stop, this is Steve's way of getting us all to port our crap to Carbon.

I know I sure won't miss Classic, however, especially the applications-crashing-other-applications hoo-ha.

Did you know that X's Classic emulator runs 68k code faster than running it in Mac OS 9 would?

Sherlock III and QT 6 sound great.

But I'm personly excited cuz they are bringing back alot of the OS 9 functionality. Lot's of new networking, internet stuff, for both Aqua and Darwin     (it's updating it to the new BSD version).

Also, they are doing Quartz Extreem. Which will incorporate 3d acceleration to render the GUI faster, which is awsome! The old Aqua had limited hardware acceleration, but Jagware is going to be full out!

I feel sorry for users of older G3 models with crappier video cards.... or maybe it will support those too?

Whatever... my system certainly wont be hurting from it  :D

Nice!!!! WOOO HOOO!!! heheh.... Job's is such a kook  :D

I like him a whole lot better than Bill Gates. Say all you want about the guy, but to me, he represents a force for good in the industry.
