Title: RHAPSODY!
Post by: hm_murdock on 30 September 2002, 07:20
I managed to get my grubby mits on a Virtual PC disk image of Rhapsody DR2/Intel.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I might be able to burn it to a CD. Fun to look at. You can definitely see the NeXTStep influence much more than in OS X, which comes over as being VERY Mac like.

Rhapsody strikes me as a cheesy bastardization between NeXTStep, Mac OS 8.5, and OS X.

I'll begin looking at how to put the image on CD. It's 750MB, so it'll have to be compressed somehow... wish me luck!

Nah, I wish  :D

I'm in collage, and the single reason that keeps me paying extra for a dorm room is the choice T1 and student network. I graduate in a few months, and i don't know how I will face the world without Ultra-fast internet.

Fuck the diplomea, I want a T1!!!  :D

A friend of mine got Rhapsody/PPC... can't find a machine to run it on, though.

allright... well, I attempted to tar and gzip it... nothin' doin'... it's still 704MB!

::mutters at it::

I'd offer to let everybody FTP it, but Arkansuck State won't allow any type of serverish kinda type of style of thing (not even Q3 or Halflife) on their halfass excuse for a network.

11Gb? I can't get over 60KB/s with a Gb card and an expensive ass CAT6 cable... where's the speed?!?

if anybody has any idea how to squish it further... please let me know!

ExEleven...

I recommend a G3 500 256MB+ or up, since it's gotta run in VPC. If someone is able to get it up and runnign on a real PC, probably a 200MHz box with 128MB.

Webmaster... check your email!

Checked, responded, all set up.  It's on its way to our PO Box . . . once I get it, I'll pop it on a server.

That looks good * RRS * but im after a Virtual Mac because I have bochs. But thanks anyway, any alternative to VMWares ridiculous pricing is good.

Where can I get a ROM, I found a Virtual Mac (modern) on www.emulators.com (http://www.emulators.com) maybe you can shed me some light on this very depressing subject?

You'll find Mac Plus and LC-475 ROMs here (http://www.emulatronia.com/ordenadores/mac.htm).

further info...

I don't know what the optimum specs for it are, but what I have is not, repeat *NOT* designed to run on any Apple hardware.

I have Rhapsody DR2 for Intel. It boots and runs on PCs, or PC emulators.

Don't even try it in Bochs. While being one of the *best* emulators, Bochs is also one of the slowest. Rhapsody wants speed.

Another note: I only have a hard drive image of Rhapsody *installed*... no iso of the install disc. This image is made for Connectix Virtual PC on Mac and Windows. If you have it, you can use this file as your HD and run Rhapsody straight off it, as the OS sitting on the drive has the correct drivers for VPC already installed.

And finally, Calum...

What is Rhapsody? To boil it all down, Rhapsody was the very early betas of Mac OS X. Rhapsody has much, much more of NeXTStep left in it. It uses the older Display PostScript layer rather than Quartz, Rhapsody apps conform to Next's package format and typically won't run on Mac OS X, It looks like NeXtStep software running with a window manager based on Mac OS 9 with a Mac menubar. All menus can be torn off, a la NeXTStep.

Screenshots are available on http://toastytech.com (http://toastytech.com) in the GUI Gallery.

I got a CD last week, just before, uhhh . . . leaving for another trip out west, here to California.  (ducks thrown objects)

The CD wasn't labeled, but I'm assuming it's Rhapsody.  Anyway, I'll be back on Tuesday, so I can check it out then and post it.

Do excuse me.   (http://smile.gif)
