I'm looking at updating my aged photo apps now that I've come into doh, and I don't know which one...
I'm not sure if I want to stay with Adobe (I'm upgrading from PS 5) or if I want to jump ship to one of the other packages. Does anybody have any suggestions?
I'll be running it on a G3 or a slower G4, so good performance is a necessary. No arguments re: the G5... it's for audio only. I need something that's pretty quick and small and light, yet full featured, and Painter so far looks the best.
any idears?
update: I just now found out that Caffeiene Software is now defunct and TIFFany is free for download. I'm getting it now and trying it. I'm also grabbing the trial version of Painter 8 from Corel

Stay with Adobe photoshop 7.0 is great has many packages to get for it and many plug-in Adobe - Qualoty [ Microsoft SuX ]

Painter, Corel is Canadian!! well it was until it was bought out a week ago.
I don't have a clue really
I told my brother to get me SuSE Desktop for christmas so I can run Photoshop, n stuff.
I think Corel is a bit cheaper, and after buying a Mac you gotta find a break some where.
Corel has a pretty good Rep. Don't they?

Photoshop gets my vote,
it's the only reason I actually have a Winows box on my network (that and Cinema 4D) There is a reason they use photoshop to do the matte scenes in Star Wars etc... It's the dogs bollocks!

I've finally decided on Painter 8, even against everyone's advice...
because my friend had it in box, unopened and he gave it to me for $135

Good Deal!
Enjoy and have fun

I will :)
I'm still gonna keep PS5 around, as there are a *few* things that it does that Painter doesn't. But Painter is X native, handles 95% of what I want to do with images, and allows me to actually paint as well.
Now I just need a graphic pad

the windows 3.1 one was so much better than the windows 95 and up one.
Too bad MS doesn't make paint for OSX.
I would have gone with photoshop... unless painter was cocoa. But thats just cus I'm used to it. (and everyone else is used to it, and there are a basillion tutorials for it on the net).
I opened painter at the apple store once. Then I closed it, had no idea what to do in it. Good Luck and have fun.

It's not more cocoa than PS7. It's carbon and runs fairly well. It's faster than PS7, and the UI is a little better laid out, IMHO

Photoshop is an expensive application. It might be overkill for what you want to do. Isn't painter more aimed at actual drawing & illustration, rather than photo manipulation? I haven't used it before. Anyways. Since you have already decided, it doesn't really matter. I like photoshop, but it is the only "image app" i have devoted serious time to actually learn. Gimp next. I think i will check out that free demo of painter...

Yes. Painter is very much aimed at art creation. It has about equal image-manipulation features as say, Paint Shop Pro does on Windows.
For what I do now, it's actually better, as I've wanted to try my hand at real digital art for a while. It's so far good and fast and stable. It runs on X, 9, and Windows, so it's compatible. It'll also open and save to illustrator files.
I likes it so far!

Sounds cool.
