Title: PowerBook Proc. Upgrade
Post by: rtgwbmsr on 2 January 2003, 03:15
Since I've asked everyone else on the planet and got a shitty response, I'd figured I'd ask the question here.

Will upgrading my PowerBook Wallstreet's processor from a 233 w/512 KB to a 300 w/1 MB have a significant difference in speed? I use OS X 10.2 in case you didn't already know.

I need to upgrade the processor. iTunes uses about 50-70% of the processor just to play music. That and typing a document in Textedit is fine, but when I have that and two browser (Chimera or Mozilla) windows open, it gets very sluggish.

Although I have to say, taking the RAM from 160 to 256 gave a nice speed boost, especially in program launching speed. But enough RAM, the processor meter thing is always at 90% or more when I'm doing anything at all, so logically I would upgrade the proc.

Thanks

Well, you'll get about a 28% increase (67mhz/233mhz).
Why only a 300 though, they make 500mhz G4 cards for Wallstreets:

Cuz the 500 G4 is 4x as expensive. I don't have that kinda cash to spend right now.

The only G4 app I really use is Bryce 5. So a G4 wouldn't really be worth the extra $100.

The 500 MHz G3 is still $300, about 2x of what I have to spend on the thing. If I waited, I could be waiting for a while...like around 4 months.

OSX itself takes advantage of the G4.  A 500 G4 will be much faster than a 500 G3 in OSX.

From the xlr8yourmac user database, I can conclude that the speed boost may not be significant...ugh.

There has to be some good, cheap way to boost the speed. *sigh*
