I bought a Performa 5260 for $25 at a garage sale!

Oh well, at least now I own a Mac. :D

That's the second time in two days that site crashed Mozilla.
Anyways, I remember that model. It's slow and lousy. :D But it is a Mac, and for $25. (http://smile.gif)

not a bad machine... newer OS versions really help the problems that it has.
but a PPC on a board designed for an 040 sucks... add to that the shittiness of the rest of the architecture + the crappiness of NuBus on Power Macs... BLEH
-
I do not think the 680xx boards were used with ppc processors. I do not think that would work. A ppc needs its own type of mobo. There were a billion different performa computers, some were actually power macs and some had the older hardware(like a 68030). Laukev probably had one of the power mac performas. Most perfomas are actually virtually the same as other mac models. For example, I have a performa 400 which is really a mac LC 30.
-
My performa has a 603e 100 MHz processor, and the manual says it has an LC-compatible 68030 PDS. No mention of PCI though.

That could help out. (http://smile.gif)
Anyways, the 52x0 only has a 40Mhz FSB, 1MB video RAM, 16-bit color at only 640x480 (256 at 832x634), and 2 DIMM slots. Ugh.
For speed, try out OS 7.5.5 on it - it's on Apple's FTP. However, JJ says newer versions help it out (whatever he means by that) - it can take up to 9.1, which can be upgraded to from the god-awful 9.0 (check Apple's site for those files too).
EDIT: How much RAM is in there? 7.5.5 can boot up inside 3MB, but 8.6 needs like 24. Be careful.

newer OS versions solve many of the stability problems caused by the hardware. they include newer drivers, et cetera.
if you want a good old power mac, get the 7200/120. it rules

48 MB.

And they say Macs are expensive.

Isn't that the model you can G3-upgrade through the most elaborate hack in the history of Macdom (i.e. the L2 cache processor card)?
Gah, PDS.

Oh, Laukev, I just read this:

It should also be noted that reports from the field indicate that Mac OS 8.1 and later smooth out a lot of issues these models suffer from.
So apparently, use 8.1+ and not the free 7.5.5 (just like Jimmy said.) (http://smile.gif)
-
OS 8.1+ may be more stable but those newer os's run much slower, especially 9 and 9.1.
If any of you want good apple hardware info, go to AppleHistory.com (http://www.apple-history.com).
This site is awesome. It has good information and is designed well. One of the few site out on the internet that is actually GOOD. The person who made this site probably shits gold.

Meh, I guess I'll sacrifice stability for performance. I don't find 7.5 unstable, to be frank.
Cuz I wanna play games!
