Title: broken mac
Post by: xyle_one on 12 December 2002, 11:47
i just got home, and went to wake up my mac, and realized that the power had went out. the clocks were flashing, and the mac was off. i pushed the power button and the light turns on, but when i release the button, nothing. nothing happens except the light comes on. shitty. so i am guessing i need a new power supply?? im almost depressed now....

That's very scary. Was the computer on when the power went out and do you have surge-protectors? If you have it plugged into a power strip perhaps something's wrong with it? Ugh, I would be contemplating suicide right now if this happened to me.

I think this counts as a power-outage horror story. (http://forum.fuckmicrosoft.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000952)

it is plugged into a surge protector, and everything else that was plugged in is fine, my external firewire drive was still chugging away, and the dsl modem was working... sucks, i checked again this morning. it just sorta makes a clicking sound when i try to turn it on. i really hope nothing is fooked. it is probably just the power supply. i really dont want to spend 2000 right now on a new g4...

Don't wanna state the obvious but have you check the fuse on the power cable? Mine always blow when the power goes funny.

Erm I dunno what you call them over there but I mean just the black cable that you plug from the socket to yer PC/Mac.
To me a power supply is the big ugly transformer at the top of my PC's case with a fan on it.

Whatever you guys call it call it, you know what i'm talking about.  (http://smile.gif)

EDIT: Actually do you have fuses in your plugs over there? I know in some countries they have them in the actual plug socket.

ps. If you don't have the correct fuse (5 amp) don't but a higher one in, that might not be a good idea. You could stick a 3A in until you get the correct rated one.

Xyle, take it to your local Apple store or certified repair center. Call apple, they can tell you a location. I'm sure it's nothing big. If your under warenty and/or AppleCare, they fix it for free. Won't bet too much money if you don't.

My old iMac burnt out during a powersurge a few years ago. Cost me 75bucks to replace my logic board. Hey, better than a new comp.

In any case, I wen't out and invested in a surge protector box.

this happened to my work mac last job. the technician said it was dead beyond repair, and that he was lucky to salvage the data of the hard drive, but he could have just been trying to justify his existence...

and carefully look over every single fucking electrolitec capiciter/*whoever invented the fluid should be drownd in it*/ i just fixed a geforce 2 for my netbsd box/*and did anohter little hack, i did keep it at 1000uf, but it is rated or 35volts and the one it replaced was for 6.3 volts? think this might cuase a problem?*/ i have also repaired a mother board/*the same netbsd box*/ by getting a differnt cap for it.

its kinda surprising how many people have asked me for it even if it is dead. if it is dead, i think i am going to modify the case for a linux machine. that would be kick ass!    :D

well. i got my new g4 in today, it fucking rocks!!. then i decided to get the old one working. first of all, the really put it together well. almost too well. after taking out the cdrw & zip drive i could get the power supply out. fun    . then i took the harddrive out and threw it into the new mac, copied my files and iTunes playlists. though, i cant get my chimera bookmarks to come over. anyways. after i copied all the files i went back to the old g4. i decided to leave the old hardrive in the new g4, i have 190gigs of storage now!!    . i assembled the peices sitting on the floor, i even through the old "broken" power supply in. guess fucking what. i hit the power button. mother fucker works. now i have 2 g4s. not for long actually. i have 2 people who want it. but goddamn it. 2 days ago i tried it again, i plugged the computer in, hit power and nothing. i take it apart today, put it back together. and it works. what? oh well. alls well that ends well and shit. i ended up with a new 1.25ghz g4 with all the fixings, and i get to give someone else a very nice late christmas present..
anyways.
