Title: kde, gnome, and linux stuff on osx

Is it possible to run kde or gnome on osx?  I was wondering if I could use a mac as a way to do linux stuff.  I would like to get a new mac so I was wondering if it could sort of be used as a linux machine as well as a good old mac

Hey, ya actually, you can.

Though from what I hear KDE is rather slow sitting atop OSX. Then again, why would you want to run it?

Apple includes their port of X11 which you can use to run any X11 based program right along side your native OSX/Aqua apps.

In effect, this means that you wont ever have to leave OSX to take advantage of the vast world of OpenSource software.

Best part above all this is the mac fink project. It provides you with the OSX port of apt-get, making it easy to download and install OSS software.

So ya, remember, underneath the hood of OSX is UNIX. That is, FreeBSD.

Once you Mac you wont go back  ;)

There ad campaign is better, it gets people talking about it. It doesnt need to sound good, it just needs to be annoying enough to make Apple a daily conversation.

You clowns need to learn about markerting.

Why would you buy a mac to use linux?

This is about as bad as trying to use windows software in linux  :rolleyes:

Sadly, that's what keeps me coming back to windows from time to time  :(

NO PHOTOSHOP!

The GIMP don't work with my WACOM tablet, and I cant get the drivers to work

that means graphics, video, and audio dudes won't use it.

I'll never use Linux in its current state for my audio work. I don't enjoy the prospect of losing the ability to use my DSP card, and then never having any real software

the commercial OSes are better for A/V

That explains how a lot of companies are using Linux for a/v editing, as both Macs and Windows PCs are expensive, and even if they pay $700 to build a PC they don't want to pirate windoze for the face they'll get and they have a good technical department.
