I was searching for info on doing an IE Less windows ME install on my new system ( only for games! ) and accidentally stumbled upon this site.
Great stuff. I'm typing this from a newly built Duron 950MHz system with just a floppy and BasicLinux. It's a great distro and should be recommended for Linux newbies who want to get their "feet weet". It's a bit outdated though and the lack of SSL when browsing is depressing.
Didn't feel like doing a gcc download to a ramdisk and compiling it coz it would all be gone when i switched off :D
Are there any similar floppy distros based on a more recent version like Slackware 8.0? I've looked but haven't seen. When I get a hard disk I'll make that my project.

OK I found this in the Windows98 ResKit book.......
pg103 "Creating a custom setup script"
[Optional Components] Section
"Internet Explorer"=0
The 0 means don't install it....you create a custom script and in files with the ResKit tools Batch.exe, Infinst.exe, Dbset.exe........and your install has no IE or other crappy applications.
Has enyone tried this yet?????

Wouldn't that be a bit of a bastard for MS in the courts right now? I wonder if it works.

Well these kind of installation tools are created by M$ so there is not much to stop people from using them. I have done an install of W2K using one of these custom install scripts and they work.
I the real world though most big companies just develop a standard image and download it from an image server over the network....at least that has been my experience.

SHH! we might get lynched for discussing M$ stuff :D
See 95ite (http://www.ifrance.com/snoopy81/95LiteE.htm) and 98Lite (http://www.98lite.net/why.html)
I have win95 OSR2 (OEM) which I bought in '95 and is the only contribution I've made to Microsoft coffers. :(
I got winME from a friend so I'l give it a whirl coz the memory management in win95 is terrible, among other things.
I'll try both methods on Friday when i get my hd and dvd drives.
I wouldn't even bother with either but for my fav sim, Falcon 4. I wish they'd port it as the source code got leaked a few years back but it would be a huge task. One can dream hehe.

winME is a bloated pile of crap that you will hate, from experience.
You will probably prefer it to '95 though...
