i can understand that with Gentoo and Slack because of the way they are build like it or not you get to learn Linux from the inside out.
But since Linux is Linux no matter what, you can go hardcore with RedHat as well. Nothing stops you.
I saw some posts here saying that they had problems with install.
I tried RH-7.1-7.2-8.0 in all three rigs of mine.
My main rig has an Abit that on the Box said it only works with Windows. Well Linux recognized everything on it.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3500 and the only thing that doesnt work is the sound card.
The third one is a cheap *** Athlon, and again all went fine.
With NIC cards I dint even bother to see if they are Linux friendly. Linksys works fine.
Same goes with all my Vid Cards. a Gforce, a Revolution 9 and the Vid card of my laptop.
As for apps, frankly the only app I had to Download was MPlayer and oh the plugin for XMMS. That took just few minutes. No big deal AT ALL!
Anyway, why people are against a Distro that will help the battle with bringing Linux to the ordinary Jo smo? Suse and Mandrake does the same thing and thats good.
I dont see Gentoo or Slack being used by ordinary jo smoes who just wants his/her OS to install and just work.
Just curious

im actually a jo smo and ive tried severel distros on a secondary comp i have and i can say i like redhat8.0
it installs with no problems, it detects even the most obscure hardware, it looks sooooo nice and its sooooo fuking stable.
i have had problems with other distros installing due to my lack of knowledge but im getting by, redhat tho was so much easier to get a competent comp going than even wind'oh!
i just cant seem to get dx9 installed for some reason.....j/k

Why is someone pretending to be Calum?
Anyway Red Hat is a good distro, and having used slackware and Gentoo, I must say that I still like Mandrake the most. Some linux people scoff at us linux users who arent "31337" enough to use Slack, but thats just it, I am elite enough to use slack, in fact I did for several months, but when it comes down to it, Mandrake makes things easier. Yeah I know how to edit text files, but when there is a nice tool like Mandrake Control Center, that makes doing things easier, I like it. I can compile from source no problem, but rpm's are just easier. Look at Void Main. He is the linux master, but he doesnt use some obscure distro. No he uses Red Hat, and he probably knows more about linux than 90% of Slackware users. Dont get me wrong, I like Slackware, but for everyday use, its more of a chore than Mandrake, Red Hat, or SuSE.

actually I used Slackware, Red Hat, debian and all that stuff.
I still like Mandrake the most... Why? I dunno... There's allways something with Slackware that pisses me off(mostly rpms not being avaliable... argh!!!!) so i switch to Mandrake.
It was allways this slow thing but now I hardly start up and services that I don't need and I use IceWM because I like it and it's nice and fast. Now it's much faster.
I also like Blackbox and WindowMaker too.
