Title: A good web based email provider???
Post by: Calum on 25 June 2002, 14:43
look, i've done a lot of searching but i cannot find that thread about "what's the best email provider, so i'm asking it again.

I need an email provider that will not fuck me around at all, that will stay online, will not start charging after a couple of months, will allow attachments of 2 or 3 megabytes, has a 6Mb or so inbox, has decent blocking and anti-spam geatures, and is hosted on a non microsoft machine.

What are my best bets? i am sick of telling everybody my new email address every few weeks.

Actually... zzn.com is running Microsoft IIS... but my website is on tripod which runs on Apache and cjb.net is running Apache on FreeBSD.

My main e-mail is a beer.com.
The site www.beer.com (http://www.beer.com) is running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.6 PHP/4.1.2 on Solaris 8

they give you 5 megs, attachments can be as big as you want (or maybe just 5 megs... I never send anything bigger than 5MB so i dont know)
you can filter out e-mail addresses that contain certain words, or even filter out subjects with certain words.

Ahh, so your web based email does not go through an MS IIS server then?

Only the e-mail is microsoft based.... but nobody has an account there...yet. I can and do use my Apache FreeBSD based e-mail for my webmaster service usually though

well i got fed up of all of this rubbish and i looked at a bunch of places and they all had snags that i didn't like, in desperation i typed "linuxmail.org" into my browser, and lo and behold. 5Mb inbox, filtering, 2Mb attachments! perfect, plus it runs apache on linux. I like.

So case closed...
thanks though!

top cool!  :D  nice to know they get your seal of approval. My last web based email provider has just gone totally offline without any warning at all, and i suspect they will never resurface again, so i am anxious to avoid such mishaps in the future...

VoidMain, go and try to sign in to your new linuxmail.org account! i dare you! those bastards are supposed to have been up since 1998, and suddenly ONE DAY after i sign up, they are totally fucked. HA! That's a new record. I am beginning to think that there's an internet god out there whom i have failed to appease or something...

In amongst all the dross there seems to be one or two good providers, but I have not checked them out.

Hope it helps you some, or at least gives you a few more to try (and get screwed by).

i use hotmail, nothotmail, kmfms.org and adelphia.net for my mail. i think that the wonderful people at ximian need to get evoluotoin to interface with hotmail like lookout express does

well i think the nice servers at hotmail should be mercilessly firebombed and any attempt to integrate an open source project with a Microsoft or .net program or "service" should be boycotted until it literally dies of starvation!  :D

iknow that calum, but it would be a better solution then say going out tio the msn website to check my mail, and does that mean that you are boycotting mono???
Title: A good web based email provider???
Post by: Calum on 18 July 2002, 03:28
fuck's mono? i don't know what that is...

also, a better alternative would be to not have a hotmail account. Actually, i have one still, so i can use it for instant messaging (but i do not use MSN for that)

also, i fucking use windows for internet! so i can hardly complain!  :D
