That's right.
I ordered the Art Asylum Enterprise-A toy from amazon. It's really nice, well detailed... only thing is it's got some fit issues. one of the engine wings is a little crooked, so one warp pod sits higher than the other... and the plate that the wings are on doesn't fit quite as tight as I'd like
but otherwise, it's great. I've got their NX-01 Enterprise, too and it's damn good, even though the damn portside warp thruster won't stay on. I even tried whittling down the plastic blocks designed to hold it on (they were molded too big) and tried to glue it on... but no dice
I don't know what to do, it doesn't fit at all now. I'm thinking it's gonna need putty.
sad that I have to use model-building techniques to make a damn toy fit together.

Sweet. I have a British Airways B707 that I've been working on forever but I'm too lazy to finish. (http://graemlins/fu.gif) landing gear.
-
airplanes... I always preferred to build them gear-up. that way I could hang them or build a nice stand for them so it looks like they're flying.
planes look cooler when airborne

After watching WAY to much star trek, I quickly noticed that Jimmy is using the wrong term for the 2 warp things that stick off of the ships. They are called warp nacelles.
-
I get sick of that word.
a nacelle is any streamlined, pod-like structure that contains cargo, crew, or an engine on an aircraft.
too many trek nerds think that what word you use for bullshit matters.
Warp engine
FTL Drive
Hyperspeed
Light speed
Thruster
they all mean the same thing
"device that makes you go"

I did not know the word "nacelle" was used for anything else.
-
yeah. it was a pre-existing word. check it out at dictionary.com...

well, I think it is kind of a cool word (not to sound like a trekkie or whatever)

I'm still wondering though... is it possible to go to warp when the impulse engine is down?
Some episodes say yes, others seem to say no... very confusing.

Considering that there is about 600 or so episodes of star trek, it is no suprise that there are many inconsistancies. I would think that they do need impule to go to warp, unless they have more ways of propultion

I could always check my ST:TNG Tech Manual. God, I'm such a Trekkie. Got the Tech Manual, Encyclopedia, PLUS the limited-run blueprints for the now-deceased NCC-1701-D. Let's build a starship, guys! :D
-
I know for sure that you don't need warp to go to impulse. I can remeber a few episodes of DS9 and Voyager in which the impulse engine was broken, and they could go to warp still.
-
I'm still working on an M2 Bradley. Ran out of one of the air brush paints and been too lazy to get it. It's incredibly detailed and I have been taking my time with it to get it right.
-
Impulse = fusion drive. There is a fusion reactor, and they blow charged particles out the back. It's a fancy rocket.
Warp = Antimatter or fusion powered FTL drive that utilizes subspace fields to manipulate gravity to "pull" the ship along using a constantly moving gravity well.
-
So basically, the impulse drive and the warp drive are two very different things?
-
Yes. Warp drive bends the rules of relativity to move the vessel at many factors of c.
Warp 1 is c
Warp 2 is c^2
Warp 3 is c^3
Warp 4 is c^4
et al
-
actually the warp equation is more coplicated then "warp 1 = c^1 war[ 2 = c^3 etc". Warp 1 is equal to c. However warp 2 is about 10.4c and warp 3 is about 39c. This is the TNG erea scale though. The TOS erea(and probably ENT too) used a different scale. Here is the equation for the TOS erea warp factor: WF=(v/c)^1/3. This scale allows the warp scale to be infinate. However the newer 24th century scale works so that warp 10 is infinate. Here is a good map of the warp scale:

In case anyone is wondering, Paladin linked an image from Ex Astris Scientia's Treknology Area (http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/treknology.htm).
Refalm's original question remains though; while one could enter warp drive without the usage of the impulse drives - being in and of themselves separate defined entities - wouldn't a standing warp like this put undue strain on the Structural Integrity Field and Inertial Dampening Field (SIF/IDF respectively), possibly indirectly leading to partial collapse of the spaceframe?
EDIT: So I guess the better question would be, could one SAFELY enter warp without using the impulse drives?

Yes, I forgot to mention that the picture came from Ex Astris Scientia which is an awesome star trek site, even for the most hard core trekkie.

the chart is bunk, as it references "infinite velocity" :-D

It shows that warp 10 is infinate speed and is therefore impossible to reach. At warp 10, a ship would occupy all points in space at once.
-
incorrect. that is impossible. w/f 10 is simply the next barrier.
if I controlled Trek, then it would be broken, and people would say "good, it was done" and nobody would give a shit about any damn "infinite velocity"
infinite velocity is bunk science.
-
Jimmy, if you want to be picky, this entire field is bunk science. Sci-fi. Made up, on the spot.
With that out of the way, Tom Paris has already exceeded Warp 10 (as well as the Borg on numerous occasions) - commonly referred to as the "Transwarp barrier." He found that a wholly humanoid body begins to take on lizard-like characteristics in order to cope with the physical strains presented by this new speed.

>sneeze<
Sorry... I'm allergic to bullshit.

update:
I got NX-01's warp engine on. I finally just melted that block off with FIRE and then built up a new one using putty. I used a helluva lot of glue, but it's on. it's ugly, but it's on.
I feel that Art Asylum owes me a refund or replacement for these ships. for the money they charge for these little tiny things, that's unacceptable.
Add to that the fact that they have like nine sounds, but only one button to control all the sounds.
Playmates' stuff rocked. I've got the TOS Enterprise and it's awesome.
I love my Playmates Star Trek collection.
BTW, I play with my toys because it's fun.

According to Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise ships in the original series could. By ST: The Motion Picture, this ability was taken out to make lighter warp engines so ships needed the impulse engine to go to warp.
I don't know about TNG and later.

GOOD! The whole NRFB mentality pisses me off.

that always reminds me of an episode of dexter's lab where they collect the action figures.

The one where they go to the Star Check convention was one of the best (http://smile.gif)
My favourate episode remains the one where the family goes to Chubby's Pizza Palace.

Stinkin' hunk o' mustard, yeah yeah yeah... :D

dexter's lab is one of the most retarded cartoons I have ever seen in my life. Everything on cartoon network and nickelodeon sucks donkey balls. What happened to good old looney toons?
Anyway, Jimmy is saying the oposite of what I have heard in star trek technology. So you would want someone in the show to reach warp 10? Well actually that was done in voyager, and it is shitty ideas like that, that make voyager a ass crap show.
