There are idiots everywhere. Just ignore them. They will soon find another topic to rant and rave about. On the other hand, fighting is cool. ;) ;)

Even if that weren't ironic, him hating canada would be no more stupid than you loving it.

There's a difference between patriotism and *blind* patriotism. The blindly patriotic are quite easy to spot, becuase they would insist that there's no such thing as blind patriotism, only patriotism.
-
"Blind patriotism" is a tautologous phrase. It's like saying there's a difference between racism and *blind* racism. Anyone who subscribes to the view that there is any significant commonality, good or bad, between the people of an arbitrary geographical region is an idiot; even more so if they hold strong feelings regarding their or anyone else's "nationality".

Not quite. There is a often a difference of ideology between peoples of different regions. While it is ridiculous to venerate a flag like an idol, you cannot overlook the fact that as people regroup by geographic locations, one people might cultivate a different set of beliefs than a people who lives on a different continent.
Yes, I know there's much more to that, but I'll keep it short for now.

Yes, you can generally very broadly and vaguely apply a set of trivial characteristics to the population of a general area, but that in itself isn't anything to value or celebrate. And there are far more valid ways to group and distinguish people that have nothing to do with the country in which they were born.

Find something useful to do with your time instead of looking at retarded things like that and posting threads about them at forums that hate you.

If you think patriotism is just another form of racism, as you seem to be describing, then you obviously don't really know what patriotism is at all.
-Pride in the good part of your country's history; attempting to make sure that the bad will be prevented from happening again.
-Pride in the culture(s) that make up the character of your country and respect for them all, rather than seeking to re-mold them into anyone's image of how they should be, expoloiting them or just trying to eliminate them. If you feel that way about certain ethnic groups or what have you in your country, then you're the one who really has no business being there.
-The desire to make it better than it is for everyone, because patriotism to one's country must include everyone or it's not patriotism at all, it's elitism.
-*Not* putting your country ahead of all others, but rather being motivated to be certain that your country has valuable contributions to make to the world.
-Encouraging others to break the norm so that can be innovative and thus help others, in your own country and beyond.
-And just for me personally, great pride in those from your country who go to other countries where the people are suffering and risk their lives and/or torture to help them, most without even expecting any thanks, let along to be called a "hero" or anything else.
That's what patriotism is. I should think it were obvious, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be.
-
No, I never said patriotism was "another form of" racism; I was simply using an analogy. I was pointing out that patriotism/nationalism is by definition "blind". I could have said "it's like saying there's a difference between being a Christian and a *blind* Christian."
I don't really understand any of the points you made. I see the value in aspiring to do all of those things, but I don't understand the restriction of "your country" that's been added to them. If you don't think your country should be put above others then why bother having countries at all? And are you a conservative by any chance?

er...
Patriot: One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.
Patriotism: Love of and devotion to one's country.
As for the rest of the post, nice virtues but you're just making it up.

I'd be just making it up if there weren't people who believe and live like that, but there are, although you can probably count them on your fingers.

No, I'm neither a conservative nor a liberal by standard definitions. And you're still missing the point: "your country" is not a restriction at all. Think about all that again in this context.
It's kind of like when you actually do hear of some volunteer in a third-world country risking his life to save a bunch of people from being slaughtered, you're proud to be from the same country that volunteer is. That's really all I can tell you if you still don't understand.

He's saying that you've just made up a definition of patriotism by listing a series of nice-sounding virtues that actually have nothing to do with what patriotism really means.

How isn't it a restriction? You're still drawing a meaningless link between yourself and the rest of the people in your country. If you're going to imagine you have some kind of romantic connection to countless millions of random people you'll never meet, then why not imagine you have one with the rest of humanity generally, rather than just human-kind only as far as it extends to your borders?

If someone from your country risks their life for someone else, what the hell does it have to do with you? Why can you be proud of someone you don't know from your own country doing something good, but not someone you don't know from the country next door?
