Title: Microsoft want to compete with Lavasoft and Webroot
Post by: Refalm on 7 January 2005, 14:38
Every Windows user has either heard or is using one of the following programs:
They remove so called spyware. Espacially Ad-aware has become a compulsory program on most Windows desktops.

Microsoft likes compulsory Windows programs, as long as they're from Microsoft, so now they've created (read: taken over some other company) their own spyware remover:

quote:
Microsoft: Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software.

Pathetic is all I can say.

It would be a much better idea to protect the OS from spyware rather than charging money again to keep your OS spyware free.

Yes, but you got to admit that it's a brilliant market strategy.
People pay you for something that creates a problem, and then pay you again to solve the problem you created in the first place.

I've heard it doesn't block Alexa.  Typical, no?

They've placed Alexa in Internet Explorer themselves, so it would be a little rediculous to remove that  (http://tongue.gif)

I predict an increased Ad-Aware market base as disgruntled users fall away from an ineffective pseudo-technology that fails to dispose of the most rudimentary of browser hijackers (read: Alexa).  The corporations will continue to use PestPatrol, and swallow smaller operations that decide that using ANY anti-spyware created by Microsoft is a good idea.  No, I don't see a threat here.  In the words of the immortal Professor Butterhands: "NEXT PICKSHA!"

Is MS giving this software away free of charge or are they selling it?

Bill Gates has never suffered from a computer virus, but he has injured many aware ad-ware and spy-ware assaults. I hope he is trying to solve this problem by making anti-ad-ware software, I would like it to be like sp2 and available for free. If its not it would really take the piss, imagine you buy Windows then you buy MS anti-spy-ware and MS anti-virus, they could make a fortune.

But there again if they make their anti-mal-ware products free and started shipping bundling them with Windows then the other companies would complain and take them to court claiming that MS are extending their monopoly.

They can't win, they're wrong either way!

Edit: Grammar

Actually, I think the PestPatrol and Ad-Aware supporters would have fits of joy, as long as the software had a simple Wise Uninstaller.  Microsoft and typical, pro-competitive behaviour?  In this lifetime?  Not bloody likely.

Why does this only work with 2000/XP? I guess its impossible to get spyware on a 98 machine!

No, but it's considerably easier to remove MSIE and the problems inherent under 98.  ;)

MR. GATES, WHY DON'T YOU JUST RETIRE ACTIVEX AND FIX INTERNET EXPLORER?

I hardly ever even bother running AdAware scans anymore, my scans have never found anything since I stopped using IE and started using Firefox exclusively.

Amen!

I have also read that a new IE windows update is coming out and whoever doesn't get the update will have problems with their current browser due to a "new bug"! The update is meant to fix this bug but only for ie users!! "Windows somehow found out about the damn "new bug" before it came out" ....iteresting? Anyways this happened not long after Firefox stole 10% of IE's customers!

Wow Billy, it is a freaking free service well not really IE but most users are windows and it comes with the hard earned $160 software you have to buy (Or find some corporate keys...) Mr. Gates why don't you just take the damn money you already have and count your damn blessings! You couldn't even spend a fraction of your damn money if you had to, so why don't you do something other than make more of it, like oh I dont know help those kids that dont have medical insurance! At least invest your damn money back into the industry when you die (not that I am wishing you harm or anything....)! But no you just cant get enough of it! Fuck You Gates!@# :thumbdown Instead of sitting around finding new ways to LIE CHEAT STEAL go enjoy life and quit decieving everyone! You may have been lucky to stumble up on a few things like: everything you sold before its inventers had a chance to do anything, lets see DOS Windows, Mouse!

You should run for office! Wait nevermind then we will all have to pay you for stuff that causes a problem and then have to pay you again to fix it, pretty much what you are doing with Windows and IE !! (as someone else stated previously somewhere in this thread I believe)

Actually, the word you want is "users". Firefox and IE can't have "customers" seeing as how both are free of charge

Sorry to burst your bubble, but in fairness.... http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

Yeah, Open Office. And change the word "for" to "from" since its taking a nice bite out of MS Office's $150-per-install market
