Five grand for a scooter?!? I could (probably) get a turbocharger kit (I'm damn sure a turbo on your car will be hella fun compared to a freaking scooter) and a new paint job on my car for that kind of money! Maybe if it was less than a grand, i'd reconsider.

Hey, you only have to put $500 down payment (non-refundable) to guarantee you'll get one by the middle of next year.  (http://smile.gif)

that inventor played it up as though it were the cure for AIDS, and he acted like it was some revolution, and he was a real innovator and true inventor going to bring the next wave to everybody.

No. He just made a really cheesy scooter that only the rich can buy.

I don't know if I would go that far. Dean Kamen is responsible for some really great stuff. I believe he invented the Dialysis machine among many other life saving medical inventions. He's developed a wheel chair that can go up and down stairs, stand up on two wheels for reaching those upper shelves at the supermarket etc.

His big thing now is the Stirling engine. He's working on several new inventions utilizing this technology. And I think the Segway is an extremely cool device. Have you seen any videos of it in operation?  I wouldn't pay that much for one now but if they ever become affordable I want one.

i remember a while ago there was all this hype about some device, noone knew what it was, then the day came and they finally showed it. what a strange looking scooter, i thought, then he explained how it works, "just think about moving forward, and you will go forward. Think about stopping, an you will stop". i thought, what a fucking wack job. then they showed people riding it. i want one. it would be nice if they went sorta fast though.
did anyone see the south park episode called "the entity". it is a spoof about the segway. very funny.

If I remember right it had a mode that would take it up to close to 20MPH, which is faster than I think I would want to go on one. Can you imagine the face plant into the sidewalk at 20MPH when the neighbor's dog runs out in front of you?

A person I know on-line is going to a lecture by him tomorrow (or someone that works with him, he wasn't sure)! Isn't that cool?

We'll find out soon. I hope they do because then I might get a chance to ride, er drive, er fly, er whatever on one. And maybe the price will come down if people buy them...

The stirling motor idea sounds pretty cool. Any chance of it possibly generating as much power as a alternator from the heat in an engine bay?

Here's the FAQ that doesn't directly answer your question but it might give you an idea of how far along they are:

The basic Sterling engine concept has been around since the late 19th century; SOMEDAY, someone is going to get it right.  I'm 55, I'm NOT hoding my breath.  I've seen the rotary piston (Wankel), the free piston, the gas turbine, the hydrogen-cycle engine, the fuel-cell, and on and on; they were all going to be THE answer to replacing the 4-cycle reciprocating piston engine; guess what we're still using.

I'm guessing you are using a 4-cycle reciprocating engine. I, on the other hand, have an electric car. It's powered by a flux capacitor which I designed in 1955 but didn't perfect until 1985. The only way I could get the 1.21 gigawatts needed to drive the capacitor was through a nuclear reaction.

It wasn't until 1985 when I did a shady deal with Iraq for some plutonium did I get the necessary fuel. Of course today I picked up a Mr. Fusion ("made in N. Korea" sticker on the back). It uses normal household garbage for fuel so it's environmentally friendly. This keeps Woody happy.

I've found you are ok all the way up to about 87mph and then it starts shaking pretty bad. One time I hit 88 and ended up here.

I, on the other hand, am much more eco-friendly;  my Jeep is powered by 75 amphetimine-injected squirrels.  I use the exhaust to fertilize my garden, and when one of the squirrels craps out, I've always got a replacement (the little devils breed like rabbits...or squirrels).

Yeah but I bet your jeep doesn't have 2-60 air conditioning like my Camaro does.

Yes but is it road legal, there is no "Chev" in austrlaia, just Holden which make the most shit cars in the world, there actually Opel's with different badges and some other things. But ford truly make kick ass cars in Austrlia.

And my dads just build a 1932 Deuce Coupe (all Steal) With a 351. It weighs a bit less then a metric (Americans with there primative mesurement system made by imperials) tonn or somthing and will do about 8 or 9 seconds on the Quarter Mile and does 0-100 in... very fast. Not much to say about the handleing though...

Get a ford 8.4 litre (yes we can mesures things logically you screwy americans) with Quad turbos and it will get 1500 or 2000 horsepower, about 1000kw's of fun. (Hell Yeah). Thats a non roadlegal ford, those engines are made in the states. Pity US Senators have no dicks, and make gay road laws.

I built the engine in my '55 Chevrolet (Belaire 2 dor hardtop) myself; it was originally a 1964 Corvette fuel injected 327 cu. in. (approx 5.3 liter) V-8.  Stock horsepower was rated @ 340 HP @ 6500 RPM; when it was finished, I estimate an honest 525 HP @7200 RPM.  When I was racing, my normal shift point was 8200/8300 RPM; not bad for 1971, eh?
By the way, I don't know of any laws in the US that resrict horsepower in road-use cars in this country, althogh some anti-pollution laws do make it difficult.
