Title: Free hosting with support for cgi-bin?
Post by: Calum on 21 August 2002, 00:50
i know this comes up ocassionally, but the forums at http://www.polytheism.cjb.net/forum (http://www.polytheism.cjb.net/forum) tend to get inaccessible sometimes. i suspect it is when too many users are logged onto the different sites hosted on the same machine all at once. So, i would like to shift the forums to some other host. Since i am not making any money off of it, i would like to use a free host.

Anybody happen to know of a free host that has support for me to run phpBB with a MySQL database on it? i know it's a big ask, but i'm looking anyway and i thought, maybe somebody would know here already.

ta in advance, btw....

I have had you forums not run when i have been there a couple times. It isnt working write now either, it tell me critical error cant connect to database.
I dont think there is any free host that will do that save nelie.org.

Of course the forums at The Bob Hub (http://www.bobhub.tk) never get clogged or slow, it is runnig as smooth as can be.

does phpBB have to use a MySQL database? Maybe you will have to use YaBB or ikonboard.

i think it can use any sql database (or other? are there any other kinds?) but i am such a novice at this and i want to be able to keep all the posts on the old board.

Why indeed does the bob board always stay up? is it because it is run on your own personal machine?

portland.co.uk looks promising so far, and DK3.com will set up a phpBB board for you in minutes for free, however i don't see any easy way to transfer my files or easily customise the database. It looks like it has been customised only for point and click people, unless i have missed something...

Portland does not allow hosting of message boards (And they only have 100mb of bandwidth per account, anyway). phpBB will run off of other SQL databases, and I know ionichosts.com provides unlimited bandwidth (I think) and comes with php, mysql, a cgi-bin and a pop up ad   (http://tongue.gif)

yeah, my forum already works thanks, i don't need another one.

if you would actually take the time to READ the topic, you would see that this thread is about free hosts that provide cgi-bin on the server.

know any good ones?

tripod.com supports cgi bin. you can only run YaBB or ikonboards on tripod though since it only supports perl. you can set either YaBB or ikonboard to run WITHOUT a database, it works fantastic for forums with mild to moderate traffic but if you hit the limit of 20mb it will not let anybody post lol.

if your site isn't that busy, i'll host ya    ;)
i'm only on DSL but it's 1.5mb with Perl 5.6, PHP4 and MySQL 3.23
for some reason i can't get phpBB to work on my computer because it has some thing about a database error, it says it writes twice but i've never actually tested it with a database which has already been established.

can i have a copy of your database just to test if i can actually run a phpBB?

hey, red ranger bob, i was able to create a board from that beta test thing, pretty snazzy dude   ;)
here is the url for my referance to see if the forum actualy stays up lol

to give a copy of the database just zip or tar the database folder (probably /usr/local/mysql/var/phpbb2) and give me a link where to download it.

i could just give you a space on my forum as well though if you wanted. my place sometimes goes down in the early mornings when d2g.com sort of cuts off occassionaly. they'll go down and in that time nobody can connect to my website or forum. i run an ikonbaord myself, i like how many more options it has over phpBB  (http://smile.gif)
you can see my forum at http://shawnserver.d2g.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi (http://shawnserver.d2g.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi)
you have to register but it doesn't need confirmation or anything (i can't seem to fix that for some reason lol)

On a side note to backup/transfer a database you would usually the "mysqldump" system command if you are using mysql or "pg_dump" if using PostgreSQL. An example would be:

$ mysqldump mydatabase > mydatabase.sql

Transfer the mydatabase.sql file to the new system and type:

$ mysql newdatabase < mydatabase.sql

See "man mysqldump" or "man pg_dump" depending on the database you use. You can also set it up to transfer direct database to database over the network but Calum would unlikely have that level of authority on the server. The dump commands should work with no problem though (assiming he has shell access).

!!!!! sorry! i didn't see your reply till just now!    :eek:
Do you still want a copy? also, are there any security issues relating to this?

on a side note, i was looking around for a good php webhost that i have the facility to pay for (using GBP) and i gound this: http://freeola.net/ (http://freeola.net/) now i didn't get as far as what their deals are because quite frankly their site sucks! how do they get any customers at all? look at that front page! i think i'll go with http://www.seiretto.com/ (http://www.seiretto.com/) if they turn out to be okay... edit - no they don't allow bulk mailing, even if it's opt in (which it most certainly is!) so no go which is a shame as their prices are great.

so. Netcadia (http://netcadia.com/?a=) are by current choice. as far as i can see they do domain name registration for "free" if you buy one of their hosting deals. does this sound right? i can't seem to confirm or deny it from their site.
Does this look okay? sorry, it's just i've got into the habit of asking people's advice here since people often give good advice here.
